An Old Fashioned Summer Birthday

Summer birthday's are always special. It's a day full of sun, sand and presents. Not only that it's full of fun food , classic fare that works well no matter what age you're turning.

Of course a warm weather birthday means one thing - barbecue. Two of the most classic dishes to serve are hamburgers and hot dogs. These are perfect because they're easy to make and are always a crowd pleaser. Hamburgers could be homemade or bought in cases like the Bubba Burger. A traditional hamburger recipe starts with lean ground beef mixed with Worcester sauce and garlic powder. You can add a beaten egg along with bread crumbs for more body and chopped onion for more flavor.(this last will give it the same flavor as what you get at Mc Donald's ).Already made burgers, including the vegan Beyond Beef ones are also a good choice and an easy cook on the grill. For a birthday party, have a fixings bar that has sliced onions , tomatoes, pickles and lettuce. You could also add already cooked bacon to this and slices of cheddar cheese. Create  a special sauce like Burger King and McDonald's .This is easy blend of ketchup, mayo, swee t pickle relish and white vinegar.A tiny pinch of sugar is also added. As for the hot dogs, these are just fine grilled plain. You could brush them with melted butter before cooking for a crispier texture.

Sides should be the classic potato salad along with three bean. The first should stick to tradition, with the potatoes being mixed with  chopped celery and hard boiled eggs. Dress in mayo and season with a little bit of sea salt and freshly ground pepper. Three bean salad can be made of the birthday celebrant's favorite beans, A popular mix is kidney, garbanzo or chick peas and white cannellini beans. The dressing is a sweet and sour one, made with oil ,apple cider vinegar and a bit of sugar or honey. A fun classic barbecue treat are devilled eggs. It's not only a tasty party food but is a perfect appetizer for a barbecue. A summer birthday demands for an ice cream cake. This can be made two ways . You can bake a cake and then layer on ice cream as the filling. Frost with whipped cream. The second recipe is pure ice cream layered with a crunchy mix of Nabisco chocolate wafers crushed and mixed with melted butter.Layer this and one or two flavors of ice cream before freezing. Add sprinkles  for a more  festive touch before serving . End the party with s'mores under the stars.

A summer birthday party should be full of good classic summer time barbecue foods. The grill should be fired,. There should be favorite and easy to make salads. Dessert should be  spectacular with large slices of ice cream cake followed by s'mores. It's a birthday wish come true,

One Steak Many Ways

Steak is one of the most versatile cuts. It can be smoky, spicy, mellow. It can be grilled or sauteed. It's perfect on the grill or just air fried. It makes for the perfect summer dinner.

Before you buy know the different cuts. There are actually seventeen (!) types of steak.Decide which one fits what you want to do.Rib eye steak is the most famous and well loved. It's marbled with rich fat so all it needs is a good sprinkling of sea salt and freshly ground pepper. It's better cooked om a grill or in a cast iron skillet with some butter.Filet mignon is one of those luxurious cuts. It has a melt in your mouth quality and is usually the most expensive. It's good on it's own but you could add some lemon butter to it. Strip steak is one of the most popular . You can get it with the bone Kansas City style or New York , which is without the bone. This is a versatile  cuts You can grill, pan fry or air fry it. Yes it's good on it's own but you can also add  a spice rub or a marinade. A good spice one has brown sugar mixed with paprika and garlic powder. Some add coffee too , both in wet and dry marinades. It's better in wet marinades because the grounds can be a bit too much (and can give you a really wild buzz). A good coffee marinade has the drink mixed with soy sauce, sesame seeds and Worcestershire sauce.

If you want to treat yourself think a  juicy Porterhouse steak. This thick cut is perfect marinated in a herbal marinade and then grilled. You could also do a wet rub of olive oil and ground black pepper.Another popular cut is the flank steak. It  is served with a salsa verde sauce or chimichurri . This is a mix of fresh oregano, parsley and cilantro mixed with olive oil and red wine vinegar Garlic is also added as is hot pepper flakes. You could also try a blend of olive oil any citrus juice like lemon or lime plus soy sauce.A similar cut is the skirt steak. Thanks to the abundance of connective tissue (it comes from the cow's belly) it can be tough in texture. It needs a good marinade to soften it. Try one with olive oil and lemon juice. Add some herbs like rosemary and oregano for more flavor. One of the most affordable cuts is the flat iron steak. This truly is a versatile. cut.It can be pan cooked, air fried, grilled or even slow cooked. To get the best of its' flavor try a simple marinade of just olive oil , garlic and herbs. It's perfect like this, with a potato and salad but it can also be put into a fajiita too.Two other versatile pieces are sirloin steak and London Broil. These are best oven cooked, with just salt and pepper on them. They're great cold being made into sandwiches too,.

Any cut of steak is great for a warm summer night. It can be cooked any way and is delicious. Get the cut you want and create a tasty meal.

A FAmily Classic Gone Vegan

One of the joys of Piedmontese cooking is the summery dish of pomodori e uovi, tomatoes and eggs. This dish can be made year round, using fresh or canned tomatoes. The problem in a vegan household? The eggs. However thanks to Just Egg, s plant based egg substitute the dish can be enjoyed again.

It's just a mix of these two.

I used a whole can of Acme's Organic fire roasted tomatoes which had a more pasta sauce flavor.I think I'll stick with the regular crushed plum version. It was well married to an entire bottle of Just Egg.

First it was heating up drizzle of olive oil and a good two tablespoons of I Can't Believe It's Not Butter.

A clove of minced garlic was added to this. You can add a pinch of oregano if you wanted to.

The Just Egg is added first and stirred around until curds form, just as with real eggs.
The tomatoes are added and stirred until the mix takes on a creamy texture.

Again the end result was so good that there was almost nothing left.

This is a great lunch or dinner and it's so easy to make. It's also heaven on earth to eat and I'm seriously thinking of making this my Christmas dinner (the holiday is about making and eating your favorite foods, after all) It's is perfect eaten with thick chunky slices of either Italian or French bread.

Thanks to discovering Just Egg I can make a family classic and favorite again. Pomodori e uovi is a great summer dish. Yet it's even better when there's snow on the ground and a nip in the air. It reminds one of a summer harvest of warm ripe tomatoes married to eggs.

Summer Baking

Even baking affectionadoes do not like to be stuck in the kitchen during a hot day. It's no fun to have the kitchen turn into a sauna as cakes or cookies bake in a hot oven. It's time to turn to summer goodies that only need the fridge and microwave.

One of the easiest, fun and delicious summer cakes is one made out of ice cream. Some, like myself, were daunted by it. Would it be as good as a DairyQueen or Friendly' s? There's no need to worry. The hardest part is crushing the crumbs and microwaving the butter to make the crust and middle.
.Start with a good hard cookie or snap. Many go for Oreos, mostly for the flavor. I prefer Nabisco's Famous Chocolate Wafers, They're a rich dark chocolate that have the perfect crumble. As for ice cream, here's where you can customize it to suit tastes. Try one layer of s fruit ice cream  like cherry ,or strawberry and the second  layer can be chocolate. Or go with vanilla. Coffee ice cream works well with both chocolate and vanilla. As for icing use a chocolate hard shell. Pour on top and let drip down the sides. Fancier decorations  come from a can of whipped cream and a spoonful of sprinkles. You can also make ice cream  cup cakes but when doing this , use a silicon mold. You could use a regular cupcake tin and papers, however the last may be hard to peel away when you want to eat them.

Layered  trifles, usually reserved for fall and winter can be interpreted for summer. This is the season  for a variety of fruits . Take advantage of the bounty. a fruit trifle is an easy make, Use store bought lady fingers for the base layer, and alternate the fruit with Cool Whip. If you're ambitious you can make your own whipped cream using whole cream, with either granulated or confectioner's sugar and a tiny splash of vanilla extract. As for fruit - go wild! Try strawberries and peaches or nectarines and blackberries. You can also create an all berry one using strawberries, blackberries , and blueberries. Ice box cakes are another hot weather favorite. One is the famed zebra cake made with Nabisco's chocolate wafers and Cool Whip.A variation of this is making a triangle shaped one ,instead of where you line up the wafers. There is also the graham cracker icebox variation where the crackers are layered in a cake pan with fruit, pudding and whipped cream.Vanilla pudding is the usual filler but to liven  it up - sub in pistachio or butterscotch pudding. If choosing the last, add a layer of salted caramel topping on top of the graham crackers for decadence.

It's summer. Don't heat up the kitchen by baking. Create tasty sweets that only require your fridge and microwave .

The Urge For Summer Food

Sometime in January or even February everyone gets a hankering for summer dishes, whether they be salads or ice cream. It could be that the cold weather is getting to us or we just miss those flavors. Don't deny yourself that grilled burger or ice pop. Go for it  - despite the temps

Who doesn't miss a juicy flame broiled  burger? You can still barbecue if the weather is crisp and cold. Fire up the grill, using any charcoal left from the previous summer. Wood chips can also be used too to give more flavor. The same goes for ribs and chicken too. Think of this method when you're busy with Super Bowl cooking too. If it's too snowy, sleety, or rainy, then use an indoor grill. There are some very good ones out there such as the Hamilton Beach or Proctor Silex . The  George Foreman Grill also has a panini press for sandwiches. If the weather thaws a bit then think of a picnic at your favorite park or beach. Even if the temps dip, you can still pack hoagies and salads, but also include a thermos of hot soup or hot beverage to warm you up. Salads too can be made. You don;t have to wait til Memorial Day to b real out the slaw and macaroni salad. The winter provide Savoy cabbage, a much more tastier leaf than the average cabbage. You can make it the same way as your warmer weather slaws. Macaroni salads are also welcome along with potato salads. In fact, these would be the preferred dishes for a pot luck football party.

The winter strangely also brings a taste for ice and ice cream. You can still have popsicles. Stores still sell them however you don't know how long they've been in the freezer section. Make your own by using molds and juice. Better yet try the Zoku Slushie Maker. This cup takes any drink and turns it into a refreshingly chill slushie. Use already made coffee drinks for a refreshing afternoon snack or a Pepsi for a bracing treat after grueling housework. If you;re on a healthier bent. then
use fresh juice r smoothies to pour into the chilled inner cup. For some reason we crave ice cream when the weathers gets frosty. Indulge yourself. Cones can still be bought so have fun with them. They're a rainy day treat . Dip the cones tops in melted chocolate and sprinkles for added flavor. Waffle bowls are a summery treat and they can be adapted for winter cravings. Hot fudge or hot caramel can always be poured in top. Hot fudge is easy to make and it's so good on something as simple as vanilla ice cream. The same goes for caramel sauce It's just three ingredients - butter , heavy whipping cream and sugar. Both sauces can also be drizzled over fruit or that most summery of cakes - the pound cake.

Indulge those summer cravings with summer foods. It's a nice break from heavy winter flavors and foods. Go for the burgers and ice cream while the weather is still chilly.

Summer Support Vacation At A Soup Kitchen

Everyone tends to forget about food kitchens and food pantries when the temps go up. It's a funny concept that we have about those who need our help. We're fine about donating time and food items during the fall and winter , and ignore doing this in favor of our own pursuits come summer. Unfortunately neediness is year long. Those who needed our help and a meal in December still may need us and a plate of  home cooked goodness now.

If you have time, even a spare vacation day, you can help out at your local soup kitchen. There's always work to be done , whether prepping fruit and veggies or making sandwiches,Also  you can dispense cold drinks  for hot visitors and ice cream for their kids. Helping out is a good lesson for the your young ones too, especially for teens and tweens. It's a great way for them to use  vacation time and giving to the community. The kitchens probably need helping cleaning up along taking out garbage and dumping spoiled food. Volunteer to wash pots and pans as well as sweeping or mopping up floors. Some soup kitchens also contribute lunches to nearby preschools, (this may be more prevalent with churches  that have both ) Volunteer to make sandwiches or be a part of the breakfast program. The best part  is the smiles you'll receive.  Also suggest having weekend cookouts where families could gather for hot dogs and corn. It's a fun way of meeting people and brining the community closer together.

If you don't have time to donate, then donate your garden. So many of us wind up with overage. After all there's only so much tomato sauce to make or zucchini bread to bake. You'll not only contribute to their meals but to better nutrition too Even those bushel baskets bought at the farm or farmer's market can be halved and donated. These can also go to food pantries too, Giving families the chance to enjoy home cooked meals made with fresh and nutritious ingredients. It helps them cut back on eating processed foods and snacks too. Some stores are contributing  their unsold produce as well along with leftover breads and dairy products. Try to get your local farms involved too or have them introduce a day where those in need can shop there for half price.

Poverty is not a seasonal thing. It exists all through the year. If you can donate vacation time or some garden produce. Both will be a great summer gift.

The Best Of Summer Wines

What to bring to someone's house for a barbecue or dinner by the firepit? A summery, light wine that everyone will enjoy. It could be red or white, domestic or foreign as long as the wine is refreshing as a warm weather breeze or afternoon sun shower.

Eric Asimov  has given a list of the twenty best summer wines that was published in yesterday's New York Times Food section A summer  wine, he asserts should be less than fourteen per cent in alcohol. This makes for a lighter , more brut tasting drink along with out  any consequences . (think inebriation followed by a possible hangover or at least  a morning headache). Mr. Asimov  also recommends going for wines that are between $15 and $25 in price. It's not as cheap  and you get better quality along with being not so extravagantly priced. One of the more elegant is the Chateau Tour Grise Saumaur Brut Non dose 2004 12. percent 2004. This is a sparkling white wine made from the chenin blanc grape. It's pure and refreshing , perfect for any chicken or fish dinner, The wine has the perfect summery notes of honeysuckle, lemon and chamomile. Another French import is La Ferme Du Vert Gaillac L'Ange Lou Mousseux Brut,2013, 11 percent. This relatively new wine derives from Mauzac grapes, a little known variety grown in the French Southwest. It is light and sparkling too, with notes with apple , straw and herbal flavors. Serve it iced on a hot evening for complete refreshment.

A surprise wine is a merlot from Argentina, a country that usually gives us malbec. It is Bodega Chacra Amor Seco Pantagonia Merlot,2012, 14 percent and is a bit high on the alcohol side. Mr. Asimov likes its' deep and fruity flavor, redolent of red fruits..It has a bitterness that keeps it refreshing The company is also known for their pinot noirs too. Bring it to a party where there are steaks on the grill, waiting to be paired with it.Another dark wine comes from Piedmonte, De Forville Dolcetto D'Alba 2013 13.5 percent. It is another refreshing bitter wine with an undertone of dark chocolate. I would suggest having it  with an outdoor bagna calda., the anchovy and garlic dip  that the region is famed for. Both are perfect for a cooler summer night gathering. Celebrate July Fourth with an American wine made in the Finger Lakes region. This is Eminence Road Farm winery Ganay Noir  Cayuga Lake 2013, 11.3 percent. It is made from the area's grapes. It is light bodied , earthy and fruity along with being seriously delicious. Drink lightly chilled  when watching the fireworks. If you want another white wine, then try Julian Haart Mosel Riesling 1,000l, 2014 10.5 percent. It's a very light wine but has a mix of minerality and creaminess to it. Open it up to share with friends during a picnic.

The summer is here. Crack open a bottle of chilled wine on a warm evening or to round out a barbecue. There are many to choose from , and many to try.

Summer Hits The Food Section

Summertime and the living is easy The same with eating and drinking. It's a season of simplicity , with dishes that take seconds to make up and libations that are also a snap to mix. This was the main theme of today's New York Times Food section. All the columns, from a City Kitchen to The Pour reflect the lazy hazy days ahead.

Salads are a big summer recipe however Julia Moskin reconfigures it as something quite different.Instead of lettuce being torn to shreds and other veggies broken into pieces they are elegantly presented  as whole or larger pieces. This is similar to Italian antipasti where the veggies are served lightly dressed. Cold cuts and sliced meats are also added .Unlike antipasti though fruits are added. Put in figs, melons, mangos and cantaloupes to counter the savory  flavors of olives and grilled eggplants and zucchini.Ms. Moskin also suggests serving it with grilled garlic bread.which is the perfect accompaniment to this type of dish.Sam Sifton contributes a French summer classic beurre homard, lobster butter He takes lobster shells and cooks them with a stick of butter. This infuses the butter with the seafood's rich , silky flavor . It can be then used as a sauce for shrimp, more lobster or a truly decadent pasta co burro. There are also recipes for compound butter which has herb leaves and  champagne along with shallots and lemon or lime juice. The butter is not melted in this case, instead the other additions are blended in , using a fork.. Mr. Sifton also includes recipes for those summer classics marinade and rub, perfect for spedie. or kabobs.Melissa Clark contributes potato salad recipes with made with  different ingredients  from lemon and mint to kimchi.

Of course no summer meal is complete without dessert and drinks.Food regular contributor, Kim Severson includes two recipes, one is the classic fudgsicle. This was a hard one for her, however after some tinkering the pops turned out better than the kind bought from the ice cream truck,, She uses both good quality chocolate and cocoa powder. Whole cream is added for density and lushness. The secret to a good homemade popsicle is emulsion, a perfect blend of the chocolate and the boiled milk, cream nd sugar mixture. It can be poured into Dixie  cups for a homey nostalgic feel or cute silicon molds. Her second recipe is for shrub a curious drink from 18th Century England. It's a tart fruity drink made with vinegar(!) and different fruit. YOu can add tonic or seltzer for bubble and fizz. Shrubs are also a good way to get rid of bruised or old fruit too. It would pair well with the second summer dessert recipe,Melissa Clark's ricotta tart. This makes for a crisp and creamy base for the season;s fruit harvests. The cuust is like an crunchy almond laced shortbread while the filling is a satiny light tasting custard, flavored with honey and cinnamon. It is good on it';s own but great with a topping of fresh peaches, berries or cherries.

Summer is upon us and with it , some tasty foods and drink.Try these dishes to liven up a lazy Sunday barbecue or weeknight dinner. Enjoy them under a sultry summer sun or warm starry evening.

A Big Summer Blow Out

This is the time for those bigger summer blowouts, the once last chance to really party before the fall season arrives. What kind of party to throw? That's up to you but make sure it's full of fun and food. Try buffets if you' ve spent the summer just grilling or have an old fashioned fancy picnic with real china and elegant food. There's a lot of different types to try.

Most people usually throw an end of season barbecue. This is the easiest to have and within most cooks comforts zones. However you can mix it up a bit by adding some bratwurst and bauenwurst to the mix. These tasty German sausages go well on hot dog buns or just eaten by themselves with a good potato salad.Another shake up is trying ostrich, or emu burgers .You could also throw a luau with a whole roast pig along with fun tropical kabobs of pork, pineapple and cherries. For any of these make sure you get a definite head count so you're not under or over with supplies.

Of course you can also try something elegant and Old World. Having an entire pasta dinner out under the trees on a starry night is a great way of ending the season. First have a traditional antipasto of cold cuts cheeses and pickled veggies. Then serve just simple rotelli or penne with a fresh veggie sauce. Finish with an easy to assemble tiramisu or fruit and wine salad. Another idea is an elegant picnic and if you want have guest s come dressed up. You can serve cold roast chickens and turkeys along with roasts and hams on a carving board. Serve cucumber salads along with ones made from spring greens . Place buckets of iced champagne in  set up corners along with plastic flutes  for niche dining. it's a neat way to have a blow out but in a very courtly manner.

No matter how you do it just celebrate the end of a fun season. You can do it with a wild style or a regal manner. Anyway just have a blast with good foods and good friends.

Summer Birthdays

Summer birthdays can always be fun. There a reba variety of different ways to celebrate, from an elegant tea to a raucous barbecue. Either way it's good food and drink. Sometimes the best parties are just simple, quiet ones. A lovely Sunday afternoon tea works well.Create an atmosphere of elegance with small finger sandwiches and champagne or sparkling wine. Make easy chicken and ham salads using deviled meats mayo and herbs. These are always crowd pleasers. Other fillings can be cucumber and watercress on white bread. You can also serve shrimp cocktail in little bowls along with salads with a berry infused vinaigrette. Of course there should be a birthday cake but have an airy one. Try a sponge or plain vanilla with whipped cream. Serve with some strawberries and or blueberries. A summer birthday party can be loud and raucous too. There's nothing like a fun barbecue full of good food and drinks. Here you can have themes, from down home to Mexican. You can even go over the top with deep fried turkey or even a roasted suckling pig. Make sure you have enough servings as well as enough time to cook meats this major. On a smaller scale think ribs, steaks and quarter pounders. Fried or barbecued chicken is also fun.Of course there are themed from having Italian heroes to Mexican fajitas. End with a tasty store bought ice cream cake. Some family owned ice-cream parlors cam custom make them with peanut butter or chocolate mint ice-cream . Summer birthday parties can be as low key or as wold as you want. There are so many different ways to go and so many different types of food to serve.Any way is the best way.

Summertime in The Snow

As much as winter dishes are hearty and satisfying, there's something about summertime cooking. It's lighter but also |more fun. In  some ways it's  also healthier too, with a plethora of veggies and fruits. What  to do if you're craving your warm weather faves?Make them. It's as easy to barbecue and make salads in January as it is in July.

Barbecued meat tastes great no matter what month you grill. Some supermarkets still sell briquettes however don't despair if you can;t find any. You or someone probably have some left over, if the kids haven't used them for a snowman. If there is absolutely none, use twigs and cut branches from your backyard. Fruit wood often imparts a sweet smoky taste that will enhance the meat. Also , if you haven't been regularly grilling, then thoroughly clean the grill and utensils you're going to use. You can still get the same cuts of meat you did in the summer. In fact grilled will be a nice change from roasted or baked.

What about those salads that everyone loves.Luckily grocers all over are always fully stocked. Granted, the tomatoes and corn aren't as nice as what we'd get during the summer but they'll suffice. You can also buy canned veggies and even fruit for different dishes. Summer faves such as potato and macaroni salads are easy to make because the ingredients  are always at hand. If you can't get fresh onions for the potato salad, use onion powder . For the macaroni that sometimes called for diced green and red peppers, then do a different spin by adding red pepper flakes. This give it a fiery twist that works well with barbecued ribs and  steaks.

If you;re craving your warm weather faves, then make then. Unless there's a blizzard outside you can still grill and barbecue. You can whip up your favorite salads too. It's easy having summertime in winter.

Preserve Us!

Some people may lament the summer's leaving and all the harvest that comes with it. However you can still enjoy what's left of this last harvest and fall's new one by preserving. This homespun method has always been received with a smirk however there is nothing like them. Homemade jams and jellies go well with everything from fresh baked scones and muffins to ice creams and pudding. It's a great way of getting more out of your harvests.

Preserving or canning does take some time and involvement. You do have to have special canning jars with two piece lids for success. The lids consists of a small cap that seals the jar's rim along with an outer part known as the screw or band cap that keeps the inner one in place. You'll also need a large covered waterbath. This is a large pot that looks like a lobster pot . It has a removable metal basket at the bottom and this lifts the jars from the water. You can use a stock pot with a wire cooling rack too. You'll need a jar lifter as well. These look like large tongs and are useful in lifting the hot jars from the water. You'll also need a funnel and a non metallic spatula or knife. .Use these to break any bubbles that may have formed in the jars. Pectins are also needed in the preservation process. These are fruit based gels that helped bind and solidify the preserves.

One you have the equipment you can have fun with what you want to preserve. It's good to use high acidity fruits and tomatoes. They go through the process the best. Most people use strawberries but you can also can other berries such as raspberries or blackberries. Figs can also be preserved along with pears. This last will be entering its' harvest season right along with apples and grapes. Remember that most grocery markets are able to ship fruit in from South America all year round so you can still preserve summer faves likes peaches, and apricots well into December. You can also take advantage of the winter's citrus crop. There are some great recipes for preserved grapefruit and oranges .

Preserving is a great way to hold onto the summer and fall harvests. Homemade preserves are also a great way to liven up any dessert along with adding extra flavor to muffins or biscuits. Try this time honored method for keeping that just picked taste.

Summer Birthdays

Summer is a great time for all sorts of celebrations, especially birthday parties. However a warm weather celebration does have its' limitations. Yes, you can feast but just watch what you serve. What may work for winter parties may not cut it for hot weather festivities. Yet you can have some great stuff , only made during these steamy times.

Salads are big during any party. Who doesn't love the mix of pastas , dressings and veggies? However be careful of what is in them. Mayo is always suspect because it turns very quickly Instead sub in olive oil for a healthier spin.Using olive oil also lets the other flavors shine through because of its' light taste. It also keeps better and longer in leftovers. Also be careful with what veggies you serve. Again tomatoes can turn very quickly , especially if they're cut as with cauliflower and sometimes broccoli. Don't over buy these veggies for crudites. Buy enough for whatever the amount of people coming. If you run out then you can always run to the store to quickly pick up replacements.

Cake is one of the mainstays for any birthday party no matter what the season. Yet you have to be careful with what you either bake or buy. Avoid any whipped cream topping. Dairy turns fast as well. If you're making the cake then use Cook Whip which is just as tasty and even lower in calories than whipped cream. There is the easy to make good old fashioned butter cream which tends to last longer . Another idea is serving a plain pound cake with a side of Cool Whip and fresh berries.Ice cream cake is another choice (albeit an expensive one). It does go fast and is easy to store the leftovers because it is frozen.

Summer is a great time for birthday parties, despite the hot weather. Choose your foods and desserts wisely to ensure a trouble free celebration. Then enjoy! It's the perfect time for cake and candles.

Summer Sales For Foodies

This is the season for foodies. It doesn't have to do with the weekend barbecues or the availability of every flavor of ice and ice cream. It has to do with the sales. Every store from the smallish Sur La Table to the giant Target has all sorts of cookware and gadgets at half price right now .

Ive found that many companies are offering their summer dinnerware at up to forty to sixty percent off. there are some pretty Fiesta ware sets along with other brands in summery yellows and reds along with cool greens and blues. This is also the time to pick up any extras like butter dishes or gravy bowls along with tureens. I've also noticed glasses both glass and plastic up for grabs at low prices too. Pick up a few to tide you over during summer party season. You can also use them in the fall and winter as well. Don;t forget the table too. With everything being sold for just a few bucks, snap up some fresh new tablecloths and matching napkins to replace your old , ratty sets.

It's a good time for buying larger items at cost too. Many places , even Home Depot and Lowe's are having phenomenal sales on gas grills. right now. get one and you'll be able to use it til October or even November. Also pick up some brushes and other barbecue necessities too. Even indoor appliances such as microwaves and ice cream machines are being offered with some kind of discount. if you haven;t had the last then take advantage and treat yourself and your family to one.

The hot weather brings many things to us foodies. The best one is the lower pricing on many items. Now is the time to buy and get yourself things you need or things you want. They're all on sale!!1

Getting Ready For Fall

Even though fall is more or less one month away , it's still wise to prepare for it. What to do? A lot or a little depending upon what you want. It could include canning , cleaning out the pantry and fridge or packing up the freezer. It could also be planning a new kitchen or buying some new gadgets.

Foodwise, September is a great month to start cleaning out your vegetable garden. You may have a few straggler tomatoes but all in all your plants should be exhausted (as you probably are of dealing with them). Now is a good time to make all those sauces for winter. The same goes for basil.Pesto works well with heavy pasta and gnocchi dishes. Stock up on plastic containers that are excellent for freezing. Another idea is to cook and freeze squash and zucchini for side dishes later on.

If your apple trees are starting to yield fruit or you go raspberry picking, then think about making butters or jams or just freezing them for later desserts. If you have any blueberries or even peaches you can freeze them for later use as well.

Fall is also the time for bigger kitchen projects like renovations. The time between Halloween and Christmas is peak time for those wanting to redo their kitchens. Now is the time to start looking at your budgets and deciding if this is what you want or something else. Summer Weddings

There's nothing like summer weddings. They can be as informal as you like, not only celebrating love but the season in a cozy setting Unlike a Spring , Fall and Winter wedding anything is possible. As with love just follow your heart as to what you want to do.

For some this may be their second or even third (or possibly even fourth) big day. Instead of going all out for a formal affair in an overdone wedding palace, think about a cozy gathering with your favorite foods and people. There's nothing like a down home barbecue, full of ribs and steaks. Kids could have their share of hot dogs and burgers. If you're having a backyard reception, then have family members whip up cherished recipes like a grandmother's cobbler or uncle's potato salad. Preparing your own food also cuts down on expenses. Money that would have gone to a caterer can now go to a more luxurious honeymoon or mortgage payment. Also the meal is made more special and endearing knowing that beloved friends and family contributed to your wedding feast.

If you go with a caterer, stick with someone you know. A lot of small restaurants do catering on the side. They can easily set up a menu with your favorite dishes for a negotiated price. Trays and steam tables will be set up in your back yard or hall for a lot less. Since it is summer the fare will be lighter. Think about seafood such as shrimp and lobster or even grilled or roasted chicken. Make sure that your caterer has plenty of vegetable dishes which digest easier during the hot weather. Avoid pastas and any dish prepared with heavy sauces or gravies. No one wants to get overloaded on a hot ninety degree day.

As far as dessert, of course your cake will be the center of attention. A simple tiered cake with a cascade of real flowers is always a good idea. You can have them match the bridal bouquet. Since a lot of warm weather weddings are beach affairs many couples go for ocean themed cakes. I've recently seen one that was designed like a sandcastle with a starfish bride and groom. The couples names were written in tho sand like icing. If that doesn't float your boat then think about - a boat! A lot of bakeries can do clever motor boats or sloop designs for your cake. Another neat idea is have candy coral and shells instead of flowers decorating the tiers. As far as cake flavors stick with something plain such as vanilla or chocolate. (or embrace the Southern tradition of having a vanilla or lemon bride's cake along with a spice or chocolate groom's cake). For extras think about ice as opposed to ice cream. This is lighter and will also cleanse the palate. Rita's Ice, that great American ice chain has party buckets that you can fill with a variety of flavors. If it's a backyard affair then serve Popsicles to the kids. They'll like them better than the cake anyway. Small dishes filled with cookies on each table is a lovely idea. You can have a tray of cookies next to bowls of fresh fruit. Remember to serve strawberries, and melon for guests who don't want something too sweet or too heavy on a summer's night.

A summer wedding should be light and fun. night. Have your wedding feast reflect this whether you have a good old fashioned down home barbecue or a small catered do in your local hall.
