A Salute To The Choco Taco

Lovers of frosty treats may be sad this week. The Choco, Taco, the classic summer ice cream is no longer going to be made.fans are desolute about this demise of this mix of chocolate, muts and crunch,

For those who don't know what this is, it's a waffle cone in the shape of a taco , filled with fudge swirl ice cream. The tacos' edges are dipped in chocolate and topped with peanuts. It was invented by Alan Drazen in 1983.It was even sold at - where else - Taco Bell to commerate its' parent company 's Klondike 's centennial.Itn was first sold through ice cream trucks and became a beloved part of Gen X and Millenials' childhoods.Choco Taco was unusual because most ice cream treats are eaten in stages. The coating goes first followed by the ice cream and then the cone. Not so with the Choco Taco. Every bite contained each of those. It garnered a massive number of fans including Reddit founder and Serena Williams' husband Alexis Ohanian who offered to keep the snack still going. You would think the other ice cream giant, Blue Bunny would step in and create their own version of this but Klondike who also produces those yummy ice cream sandwiches and bars may have the patent. This means no copies or variations by rival companies.

Don't despait though! You can easily make Choco Tacos at home. It's just taking waffle cones and heating themfor eighteen seconds in the microwave.  Wrap them up in a damp cloth and then shape into a taco shell when they come out fo the microwave. Allow it to cool and harden. Fill the tacos with fudge ripple ice cream to imitate the orgiinal recipe.Melt chocolate melting discs in microwave for thirty seconds. Stir and repeat until all the discs are smooth. Carefully spoon this over the tacos tops and then sprinkle on chopped peanuts. Return to freezer to harden. I realize that this recipe can have a lot of variations. For starters, why just have the fudge ripple? You can fill the tacos with any kind of ice cream. You can add in chopped berries , or flaked coconut for a fruity twist. Some nuts can also be tossed in for crunch. Skip the chcocolate and peanuts on top. Add a small bit of hot fudge  caramel or strawberry sauce. The tacos can be topped with wet walmuts or a layer of maraschino cherries instead of the peanuts. Of course sprinkles add a whole new level of fun and these would be perfect at any summer party.

There may be a movement to save this classic treat. Choco Tacos are a big part of the American landscape. Enjoy them and all their icy goodness.

Summer Food Fights

Hot weather usually brings about heated - no pun intended - debates. Namely it's about one summer fave versus another. What's the best way to make a tomato sandwich?Or ice cream versus ice What's is the best of the summer?

Sometimes it's just about a sandwich -namely a tomato one. There is a huge debate about adding mayo or no mayo. Without the condiment, the earthy sweetness of the tomato takes over yet with it, the fruit's flavor becomes more vibrant. It also adds a creaminess to the bite as well. A second debate is the bread. Toasted or  not toasted. Toasted gives the sandwich crunch and makes for a more solid base to sop up the juices. Not toasted, it's a nice chewy feeling. You could really throw a monkey wrench into the work by suggesting sourdough or French or Italian bread. These are perfect for chewiness and absorbing all the juices along with adding to the flavor. Yet so many would never try a tomato sandwich made this way. Forget about adding the garlicky aioli, Provencale's France's go to for everything from sandwiches to grilled fish and meats. Then there's the tomatoes themselves. Do you just go for the plump and luscious beefsteaks or try the ever sweet vine ripes? Should you think outside the box and used sliced grape or cherry tomatoes? Again, many have definite ideas about what sort to use.

Another summer debate is ice versus ice cream. Which is the cooler, literally and the most refreshing? Ices are basically just shaved or crushed frozen water with some kind of fruit syrup or puree added in. They've been around since Roman times when servants would run into the mountains outside of Rome and bring back buckets of snow. Honey or crushed fruit were then heaped on top. Personally, I like ice more, namely the Slushies you can create with the Slushie cups. There's something infinitely refreshing about a cola that being transformed into cooling spoonfuls of ice crystals. Ice cream may do that for some people but not for me. Yet that's always been a big debate. Many prefer the creamy flavor and mouth feel of a scoop of vanilla or chocolate. Ice  cream is versatile. It can be easily topped with fruit and syrups along with whipped cream, nuts and sprinkles for a special sundae or parfait.Add a blob of vanilla to root beer for a special foamy treat.Unfortunately the more you eat  the thirstier you become. This is do to the sugar particles in it sucking out the water from the cells. Ice , somehow doesn't do that. Maybe because there's a good deal of water in the mix.

There will always be summer food fights.  Yet it's up to the individual to decide . Taste is always ours , whether others agree or nor.

Sweet Treats For Mom

Even though you can';t go to the store to pick up candy for mom , you can still give her delicious gems of chocolate . A homemade treat is not only sweet but memorable. It's easy to create something that will highlight her special day. It can be as homey as fudge or as elegant as truffles. Whatever you make is a gift.

One of the easiest candies to make is fudge. It's a simple mix of chocolate chips, condensed milk, butter and if you want chopped walnuts. Everything is cooked in a large saucepan over a low heat and then poured into a prepared pan. A buttered one would add more buttery flavor but parchment or aluminum foil can be used for easy removal. You can add a few drops of mint extract for a chocolate mint flavor. For mom's who live a nutty treat think a peanut butter fudge.Add  two cups of either smooth or crunchy peanut butter along with peanut butter chips to vanilla and confectioners sugar. This is layered onto chocolate fudge for a strata effect. Haystacks are another easy make. This is a two ingredient candy that just needs melted chocolate and toasted coconut. The coconut is first toasted either in an air fryer or toaster oven while the chocolate is melted in the microwave., You can add a small amount of butter for richness. Haystacks can also be made with milk chocolate and white chocolate chips too. Create all three flavors for more choices.

Surprisingly anyone can create sophisticated candies such as truffles. It's really all about the filling which is a rich ganache. This is simply chocolate and cream but it should be good chocolate in the 60 - 70 per cent. Do not use chocolate chips or chopped bars that can have hardening agents. This can ruin the candy's texture.  Baking chocolate works the best. Use a heavy whipping cream so the ganache can develop a thickness. It's then heating it , in the microwave and pouring the hot cream over the chocolate. Stir to  combine. Then it's whisking it until it's smooth and shiny. After pour into a shallow pan and put in the fridge. To shape the truffles, use a melon baller  and then roll them in cocoa powder, chopped nuts  and sprinkles for a candy box variety. You can fill the truffle balls with candied ginger or a whole almond for a different treat. If mom likes spice and chai tea, you can whip up a batch of chai truffles. It's a mix of cinnamon, ginger, cardamon and cloves. along with star anise and black tea. All of this is cooked with heavy cream. The blend is them mixed with good milk chocolate and more spices are added for zing. These can rolled in grated milk chocolate when they're hardened.

Candy for Mother's Day is always a treat. Homemade candy is an extra special one moms will surely enjoy. Whip up a batch today or tomorrow for a truly tasty gift.

Moby's Is Open

One of the best aspects of the season is when Moby's Lobster Deck opens. This is a division of one of my all time favorite restaurants, Bahr's. This century year old famed eatery is a great place for seafood for the fall and winter.
Every meal comes with a small plate of their warm homemade Bisquick biscuits, loaded with butter. My favorite is their shrimp cocktail and Manhattan clam chowder.
Now Moby's is open with the same delicious dishes that Bahr's has.
Moby's was started by the great-grandson' of the owners. It has everything from burgers and dogs to cod sandwiches and again, my favorite Manhattan clam chowder and chilled shrimp. The last has a herb coating that just accentuates the briny flavor.
Moby's also has a wide selection of ices and ice cream. You can easily get a cone with sprinkles after polishing off a lobster or fish and chips. One of my favorites is their chocolate covered frozen banana. This is cold heaven on a stick, which you can buy plain or with sprinkles, nuts or coconut flakes. It really is the perfect  quick bite dessert.

Moby's is open. Head down to the Atlantic Highlands, Enjoy the beaches, sand and surf. Most of all though, enjoy this summer staple.

Your Easter Recipe Guide

Easter  is fast upon us and it's this week, Holy Week, that should be a balance of observance and preparation. Do you have the main curse settled? What about the sides? Will it be an Easter brunch or a potluck? Holiday dinner or  barbecue. Then there are the desserts. Is it all up to you or will it be a group effort? Will there be an egg hunt with treats too? It's time to start deciding and writing up lists.

One of the most important decisions is the main course. The most traditional choices are lamb and ham. The first is big in Mediterranean households, namely Italian and Greek.  Do you cook a whole lamb (which is not for the squeamish) or leg? If it's a small gathering , then a leg of lamb would be the best choice. Your butcher and some groceries can debone and butterfly it.Keep in mind that there are difference between New Zealand and American bred kinds. The American sort is meatier, fattier and sweeter than the other. You could also go with lamb chops too or the slightly tougher shoulder of lamb. Remember that lamb can also be barbecued. What should you serve with them? Fresh spring greens such as asparagus and peas. Ham is another beloved Easter main course. If you feel that it may take over your oven , then assign sides to guests .Another question to ask yourself, do you want it as part of a formal holiday meal or a brunch? That changes the sides. A more traditional dinner would have sides of roasted baby beet salad and possibly green beans with shallots and hazelnuts.Peas with mint are another lovely  side that's both fragrant and tasty. A brunch would not only have the ham as the centerpiece but also veggie laden quiches filled with asparagus and dandelion greens. Also make sure that there are mimosas and bellinis for the adults and juice and seltzer sparklers for the kids.

Easter is more a time of sweets, more so than savory bites. If you have the time, you can bake and ice a lamb cake.It is labor intensive work ( as my previous pictorial posts demonstrate) and it's easier to do if there are two people. Another festive and a bit easier  project is an Easter egg cake. It's just a one layer cake decorated with three or four dyed icings.  You can also buy an Easter egg cookie decorating set. Stop & Shop sells these and they come with already baked shortbread cookies, icing and candies for decorating.  This can also be part of the holiday activities for the kids. There is also the Peeps Coop  which has six already baked cookies to be assembled and decorated with bright yellow icing.  Sprinkles and jelly beans can be added for more dazzle.  As for the young ones, think about making Rice Krispies chicks and bunnies. It's making a whole sheet of the treat and then cutting the shapes with a cookie cutter. The mix can be tinted with food coloring  to make the pops more festive. Cake pops are another fun bite. Coat them in the various chocolates and dip in festive yellow and pink sprinkles. If the dinner is just adults , then end it with a light yet sophisticated lemon jelly roll dusted in confectioner's sugar. A raspberry trifle is also a sweet classy end to a ham or lamb dinner.

This is the time to make decisions for the holiday ahead.  Choose what dishes and treats will work for you and buy their ingredients. Then shop for the dinner ahead. It'll be easy with a list and a clear vision of what you want to make and bake,

A Cookie For Every Occasion

Cookies make any event or party even more special. They add fun and color, especially if they are themed.. What's best is that you can make them in your kitchen, thanks to a new cookie cookbook, You can create professional themed cookies like the pro bakers.

A Cookie To Celebrate (Mango Publishing 2018) was written by Jana Douglass, founder of Jana Lee's Bake Shop in Columbus Ohio.,Ms. Douglass has a famed cookie shop featuring baskets of themed sugar cookies. To buy a basket is a whopping sixty dollars, however  thanks to her new book, a home baker can create a festive basket of cookies, whether for a birthday, holiday , event or shower. They'll be perfect for this Instagram age, in which Ms. Douglass is a star. She has designed all sorts of cookies, from a salute of the famed children's literature heroine Eloise, to a nod to Meghan and Harry's Royal Wedding. Her Christmas cookies are whimsical, . There's one decorated as a baking sheet with little dots of unbaked cookies. The book features the basics and gives good advice. along what brands of dye and cutters to use. There is also a basic sugar cookie recipe that is easy to follow and perfect for cutting into shapes.Ms. Douglass even recommends variations with flavor, such as subbing in almond extract for vanilla. What's surprising is that she doesn't include a chocolate cookie recipe for those who want to bake a variety of treats.

Of course this book is all about the icing and decorating. She gives the recipe for royal icing which is a mix of powdered sugar, meringue powder, water and vanilla, This creates the best "paint" for the job. Another use for it? Homemade sprinkles!! Yes! They are very easy to whip up and you can make them in matching colors to the cookie designs. Home bakers will enjoy the how to chapters.. She'll teach you about outlining the cookies and flooding spaces with icing. There are recommendations on when to use decorating tips and when to graduate from them. It's then onto different and fun designs, that also involve sanding sugars and edible gold dust. Another plus is that Ms. Douglass gives a lot of tips. She believes in practice makes perfect, especially when writing on the cookies. There is the recommendation of practicing on parchment paper first. Since these cookies would be perfect for bake sales, there is a chapter on how to package  them. - wait eight to twelve hours -  before putting them in sandwich bags. Ms. Douglass encourages fellow bakers to put their creations on Instagram and a few proud bakers will.

A Cookie To Celebrate is the perfect how to book in this Instagram age. Create a phenomenal batch of  iced treats , celebrating everything from a new baby to a holiday cookie party. It's  easy and best of all, it's fun!

Happy Birthday Disaster

I had such high hopes for the cake I was going to bake for my friend's birthday. It started out good.Unfortunately I can't even upload the pictures regarding this. It's like the whole project is against me!!!!!

It is blurry  but you can see it's the Duncan Hines butter cake, along with sprinkles and butter. I did everything according to the instructions (well except for the sprinkles) I added half a cup which I thought would be fine. It wasn't.

The butter part was fine. I diced it to make for easier blending. This is the batter
The batter looks fine. It was fine as I poured it into the two inch eight inch round cake tins The problem was that the batter super rose and got all over the oven floor. Could it be that I whipped too much air into the batter, thanks to my new Proctor-Silex beater? Maybe? The batter didn't set on one layer. That went directly to the birds when cooled.
I made a traditional butter cream for the remaining layer,
As you can see the cake is in the pan and is too soft to be lifted out of it. Just a plain icing graces it, hiding the mistakes in the upper right side. I used Wilton's Sparkle Gel icing to write happy birthday. If it had come out OK, , it would  have been a blue and green ombre, but alas it wasn't.

Will I use Duncan Hines again? Maybe. Maybe not. Will I bake butter cake again? Probably not  but never say never. This has been an eye opener in a usually idyllic and problem free baking season. I will try again - but not so soon. I think I need to get the bad taste of a flop out of my mouth.

The Perfect Birthday Cake

One of the crowning moments of any birthday is the cake. It's usually a perfect two layer affair with a yummy filling , frosted with buttercream. Buttercream roses or marzipan figures decorate it.It's a challenge for many home bakers , yet it doesn't have to be. Any home baker can create the perfect birthday cake.

One of the biggest dilemmas home bakers face is what kind of cake to bake.Scratch or mix? Many purists will tell you scratch is much better for you health wise and taste wise too. However, if you're pressed for time, a mix is a lifesaver. If you want to make a scratch one, keep it simple with a vanilla or a chocolate flavors Make sure you have all the ingredients from the baking powder to the butter and eggs. Remember to have unsweetened  cocoa powder if you're making a chocolate scratch cake. As for mixes, Duncan Hines  brand is really the best. The mix produces the best crumb - moist and flavorful. Pilsbury and Betty Crocker are also very good. All have a variety of different flavors that include such fruit flavors as orange ,lemon, pineapple and strawberry. Betty Crocker has the  fun SuperMoist Rainbow Chip cake , a mix filled with multicolored sprinkles. Once you decide on what kind of cake you're going to bake, check your inventory of pans.  The best kind is nine inch metallic ones. These  produce perfectly baked and even layers , with no burning. Also make sure you have a cake tester which is crucial is determining when the layers are done along with a sturdy wire rack for cooking.

The filling is important too. Many home bakers just use the icing as the filling, which can be OK if it's not too sweet. Cream cheese icing is the filling of choice for classic Red Velvet and carrot cake as well as banana cake. For other cakes, pureed fruit and whipped cream make for a nice  not too sweet filler. Try a layer of fresh cream and raspberry for any chocolate or vanilla cake.Lemon curd is a great filling for a lemon or pineapple cake. It's an easy mix of lemon juice with zest blended with egg yolk, sugar and butter to create a kind of pudding. A strawberry cake would be made decadent with a chocolate mousse one., and then iced with a dark chocolate butter cream. As for the finishing touch, buttercream is the way to go. Fondant, a combination of corn syrup, shortening and powdered sugar, flavored with vanilla is heavy and will make the cake cloyingly sweet. Save it for making figures and objects. Go with buttercream. The frosting can be made in a variety of flavors from vanilla to raspberry to orange to even peanut butter. Again, make sure you have the instruments to make the perfect gateau. An icing spatula is a must  because it gives a smooth glossy finish to the cake. Icing combs will give the sides those perfect even lines that bakery cakes have. Make sure you have a good cake icer that has a variety of nozzles to make buds and leaves. A cake nail is necessary to make those big roses that grace every birthday cake. Also have a nozzle with a small tip for writing.

The perfect birthday cake is the perfect gift. It should have a moist cake, a delicate filling and a creamy , buttery icing. The combination will give you  a memorable creation that's worthy of any birthday wish.

Creating The Perfect Pantry

What makes a perfect pantry? Is it canned goods like soup and beans? Dry goods such as flour and baking soda? Jars of this? Containers of that? Not surprisingly it is a manageable blend of  variety of different foods, Have the right amount and you'll never go through a shortage.

Canned goods are always important, especially now in the cold weather. Homemade soup is good but it pays to have several cans of prepared soup. They make a quick lunch or supper and can also be used in a variety of casseroles too. Always have everyone's favorite , from tomato to chicken and stars. Take advantage of sales at the local grocery too. If they have a twofer sale, then definitely get more of them, Packets of soup mixes are a pantry plus. They have the flavor of homemade soup without all the work.  Another pantry must are bouillion cubes. Get all three kinds, chicken, beef and vegetable, to make a variety of different soups and sauces.Sauce packets such as chili and Hollandaise are also worth having along with instant meat sauces for roasts. Jarred sauces can also be put into the pantry too.Canned veggies and fruits are a must too. The canned veggies come in handy if there's a blizzard and you can't get to the store. They can also be added to soups and soup mixes. The fruits are perfect for making pies and turnovers.

Tomato sauce and paste should be prominent on any pantry's shelf. These always come in handy for when you're making homemade sauce for pasta. The same goes for pasta, itself. Have a variety to suit all tastes. Spaghetti is the most popular and easiest to cook so have a few boxes of it at hand. Also on the shelves should be the versatile pastina and orzo style. These are excellent in both soup and sauces. Slip in a box of the drinking straw like bucatini and thicker fettucini. If you have kids or still hold on to those childhood faves, then have a few cans of Spaghetti-os too. The pantry should  have plant based oils . Olive and vegetable are the ones of choice, especially the last because it can be used for everything from cooking to salads to even baking. Cake mixes along with flour and baking powder should also be included as well as decorating items such as sanding sugar, food coloring and various types of sprinkles. Sweet sauces such as chocolate and caramel along with  jams and jellies need to  stored there in addition,.

A good pantry is a well stocked one, Make sure there are the basics to help you get through everyday eating. It'll make cooking and baking that much easier.it'll also cut down on how many times you go food shopping in a week.

Funfetti Confetti Cake

Cake is festive. That's a universal truth. It usually symbolizes a party , especially if it's a colorful one, dusted with a rainbow of sprinkles. Now those sprinkles are inside the sweet treat, giving a more festive look.

Julia Moskin wrote about a new party classic - confetti cake in yesterday's New York Times Food section. Whatever you call them, whether they're candy confetti, sprinkles ,jimmies, or hundreds of thousands, they are big right now.Pro bakers and even mixologists are using them on  everything from cocktails to croissants. They're even used to decorate phone cases, scented candles and even press on nails ! Now they're exploding all over cakes, turning bland white cake into a Jackson Pollack canvases. Why now? Most bakers were kids in 1989s when a new product burst upon supermarket shelves.Pillsbury came out with Funfetti Cake,a vanilla cake mix that came with multicolored sprinkles. The twist was that they were going to be baked into the cake. They'd melt into streaks and dots of vibrant color which made them into an instant hit. Funfetti cake was then a definite must for every home party.Copycats soon abounded.A year later, Betty Crocker came out with Dunkaroos, a snack pack of cookies with sprinkle laced icing. Even Dannon Yogurt jumped in on the craze. In 1992 they came out Dannon Sprinklins, with candy confetti packed separately in the lid.

Now there are grown up versions of the cake all through Manhattan.Pastry chef , Christina Tosi, of Milk Bar in New York was one of the first to produce colorful cakes. Her passion for sprinkles started when she was young and it was with , of course, Funfetti. She cleverly turned the cake batter into cookie dough. Her current take is still the number one requested dessert, and at the NoLiTa outpost of MilkBar, there's even a wall of sprinkles. She's also put them in homemade tahini ice cream sandwiches and mandelbrot, the twice baked almond cookie.Chef Yeh loves them so much that she even had guests throw them at her wedding.Fancier bakers around the city have even put them in croissants and macarons along with giant Funfetti wedding cakes Some are even making their own hundreds of thousands. Sohla el- Wayly of the Hail Mary Diner in hipster Greenpoint makes her own. These are vanilla and rose flavored, made with egg whites, confectioner's sugar and food coloring. She pipes them in long, skinny lines on parchment paper, allowing them to air dry. They're then  "plastered" on the diner's tall vanilla cake giving it a wild , eccentric quality, like something from the Mad Hatter's tea party. The best bet is to go to your grocery store's bake shop where you can buy medium sized cups of multicolored sprinkles. some even have holiday colors, like black
and orange for Halloween and red and green for Christmas.

Sprinkles amp up a cake's fun factor. Go crazy with them and create an explosion of color with every slice. It's a fun way of celebrating cake.

Bananas For Banana "Ice Cream"

After writing about the ice cream made solely from bananas, I couldn't resist and made it.  As always it takes me a long time to jump on the bandwagon, The recipe has been around for a few years, I had seen it on every show  from Dr. Oz to my local Fox Channel 5 AM show "Good Morning".

I think my initial resistance was that it's a fad and that people will forget about it. I just wrote about it in Monday's entry.I just had to try it after seeing all the pictures. It looked too creamy and luscious.

And you know what? I was hooked. It's easy to make. Just take a very ripe banana, the kind with a lot of brown and black spots., Slice into coins and then freeze , preferably overnight in a freezer bag.

I then added them to my mini food processor. Some recipes call either for this or a blender. Stick with the food processor. The blades are sharper and can handle the frozen fruit better.

Now pulse. It'll look like either oatmeal or flaked coconut.

It then goes through a gooey stage. Hang in there. I guess this is the part where the pectin in the banana melts with the ice crystals . It gets better.

Much better. See how creamy and airy it is? It really does look like soft serve ice cream.

Now, many people  would just end it there, but I didn't.

I turned my batch into a sundae and before any of you think it's counterproductive, look closely. The syrup is Hershey's Lite syrup with only 20 calories a serving and Stop & Shop's Lite Whipped Whipped Cream at only 10 (!!!) calories a serving. It's like the lowest calorie banana split ever.
What you do with it is up to you? Many add cocoa powder for chocolate "ice cream". Some add almonds or peanut butter. You can even sprinkle chocolate chips, jimmies or mini M&Msover it or blend them in. . It can even be plopped in a cone or waffle bowl if you like. You also don't have to just use one banana. Make a bigger batch with two or three. The  "ice cream" lasts for one week, however I know from experience - it won't. Make your own batch and see why.

A Cupcake ATM

There's a new trend that New Yorkers are just gobbling up- the ATM that spits out cupcakes. It's a new twist on a kind of old concept, the vending machine. The difference is that the goods are freshly baked and have a constant demand. The store selling them is Sprinkles. It's mostly a California based coany with branches in LA and La Jolla. It expanded to sweets loving Manhattan where it's now a staple. It sells all sorts of flavors, and even has flavors of the month.Sprinkles also serves cookies and ice-cream although there's no talk of having an ice cream dispenser alongside the cupcake one.Cupcake lovers pay a whopping $4.25 for each cake(to be honest, there are over sized so you do get your money's worth)as they select their favorite Sprinkles offers such diverse types as banana and cinnamon sugar along with the usual, chocolate, vanilla and red velvet. There are even unsweetened ones for dogs, costing the same amount as the human treats. If this catches on, then there maybe more " food" ATMs.Imagine a pizza one that can give us piping hot slices along with whole pies to go.This could work for city branches of any fast food joint.Instead of waiting on line, you just press buttons on a menu, drop in your money or slide your credit card and voilà a burger, soda and fries. It could also work for delis too, alleviating those long lunch lines. The ATM concept would be great for ice cream parlors, especially for those wanting pre made sundaes and dishes.People could just go up and get a homemade bar or Eskimo sandwich. It's surprising that Starbucks hasn't run with this idea.It would make ordering a latte or chai tea much easier in big cities and malls. Despite the idea's cuteness,Sprinkles does have a good idea. Having food ATms outside the stores reduce long lines and increases profits. It also boosts a product's popularity and gives it new fans.

Homemade Valentine's Treats

There's nothing like loving from the oven. This is never more true on Valentine's Day when any kind of sweet can capture a beloved's heart. Nowadays it;s easy to whip up a batch of this or a tin of that in just few hours. Home bakers and candy makers can also show their creative flair too and allow their loved  ones some unique homemade goodies.

Any baked good is always appreciated. There's nothing like homemade chocolate chip cookies to finish off a romantic meal.if there's no time to gather up ingredients just get a stick of pre made cookie dough. After they're done cooling , dip them in microwave melted chocolate for added decadence. Heart shaped sugar cookies again are a fun dessert and they can easily be iced with pre made frosting, Sweet, coy or even suggestive messages can be written on them as wel. Better yet turn these treats, into sandwiches. Make an easy ganache of dark semi sweet chocolate and heavy cream  . After it cools then spread on the cookies and assemble. Tartlets are also fun to make and you can fill them with everything from fruit to nuts to dulche de leche.

Don't forget homemade candy is another great Valentine's Day gift. Fudge is easy to make and there are so many variations to play with. Try a few drops of mint extract for chocolate mint flavor. Add walnuts or almonds for a truly nutty fudge. For a fruitier version, toss in some dried cherries or blueberries. Haystacks are another fun and super simple gift to make. Melt any kind of  chocolate , add toasted coconut(it can be toasted  in a toaster oven) , mix together, and then drop spoonfuls onto a greased cookie sheet. Pretzel rods are also a yummy sweet and ,again, they're easy to create. Take average sized pretzel logs, dip in either melted caramel first or just any kind of chocolate, then roll in either chopped nuts or pink, white and red sprinkles.

Homemade gifts are always appreciated. Whip up something decadent and sweet for your sweetie this Valentine's Day. They'll enjoy that it was made especially for them with love.

Halloween Candyland

Yup, this is the day when kids and even sweet fanged foodies indulge themselves. It's Halloween here in the States and although it's celebrated in other parts of the world, it's a big draw here. Halloween is a time to indulge in mini Snickers or candy corn, popcorn balls or caramel apples. It's a fun day with treats and surprises at every door.

Halloween started out as a Celtic celebration known as the Feast of Samhain .It was the day when the Celts celebrated the dead when the otherworld became thin enough for spirits to pass through. Basically Samhain means summer's end in Gaelic and that's when they celebrated the harvest with bonfires and feasts. The name Halloween itself came from old English :Eallra Hālgena ǣfen or All Hallows Eve. Today we know it as the day for costumes and candy.

We all have our Halloween foodie favorites and memories. Some might remember chocolate or vanilla cupcakes topped with orange icing and black sprinkles. other might remember stuffing handfuls of candy corn into their mouths. I used to like the candy cigarettes and bubble gum myself, A s I got older I used to buy my favorite candy , namely Milk Duds, to hand out , hoping for a few leftovers at the end of October 31st.

I'd like to hear about your favorite Halloween foodie memories. Which one of you out there went mad for popcorn balls? Or Reese's peanut butter cups? Did you like the ghost lollipops or the solid chocolate pumpkins? Let's hear from you sugar crazed ghoulies .

Sprinkle This On The Story of Sprinkles

Warm weather means ice cream and with it those rainbow or chocolate sprinkles or jimmies. How many times has a sundae or even a cone been made more special with the addition of these little candies? They’re’ also fun on cakes , cupcakes and cookies too.

Sprinkles were invented in the early 1930s by the man who gave us Peeps, Samuel Born . They were named jimmies after the inventor, Jimmy Bartholomew. In England and Australia sprinkles are called hundreds of thousands (what else???) The Dutch also lay claim to inventing sprinkles with a one Gerard de Vries who created them for a school boy who wanted chocolate on his buttered bread. The Dutch still like them thickly layered on a slice of butter slathered white bread.

Whether you like rainbow or chocolate ones, sprinkles are a welcome and fun addition to any dessert. There’s nothing like soft ice cream covered with them to provide a certain “crunchy” texture. They add a festive air to butter cookies (especially the big ones you get in a bakery). Sprinkles or jimmies are even neat on a chocolate or vanilla iced cake as well as in the filling. They’re also good for adding color to ice cream sandwiches.

Sprinkles are a fun way to eat ice cream or any dessert for that matter. Pile them on for real color or just ad a pinch for a small bit of a fun look.
