Labor Day All Year Round

Happy labor Day to all my American readers home and abroad. It is a day of relaxation from work and in some areas the first week of school. Just remember that the people who grow and pick your food labor hard all year long. Many don't have the benefits or perks you have. Some are living below the poverty line.

Remember too that your servers and restaurant chefs and cooks work doubly as hard , almost never taking breaks or vacations. They work ten  - eleven  hour days creating all sorts of dishes, serving all sorts of dishes . Give them generous tips and reviews.. They rely on them for a living.

It may be your Labor Day just for the day but it's food worker's every day  of the year

The Delights Of Salmon

Here the scoop not only is salmon good for you,it's also one of the most flavorful meats. It's also the most versatile. You can grill it,bake it or broil it.Even canned salmon is versatile and a healthy meal choice. It too can be turned into a variety of different salads and even dips.Because it's light, it's the perfect meat for these warm late Spring days. Salmon has a tremendous amount of benefits. One is that it is chocked with an unusually high amount of Omega 3 proteins, in fact more than any other fish. The protein is excellent for lowering cholesterol as well as strengthening cells. It can also help the body fight off such cancers as colon, breast and prostrate. It even decreases the risk of bolo related cancers such as Hodkins lymphoma.Incorporating salmon into your daily diet can also make you happier.Studies have shown that people who have a salmon rich diet do not suffer from depression along with having a decreased risk of hostility. It's also good for joints, reinforcing cartilage.Another benefit is that eating the fish two times a week can significantly cut down on the onset of macular degeneration ,a condition in which the retinas dry up. Salmon is also a flavorful fish on it's own. Unlike tuna, which has the best flavor when it's packed in oil, salmons, strong, almost earthy flavor stands up. However it works wells with such a variety of herbs, spices and sauces, more so than any other fish. There are several different types to choose from. The first choice is wild or farmed?Which is the better and healthier choice? Many chefs and nutritionists will tell you to buy wild.Farmed salmon is no different than chicken , beef or pork that have been raised in pens. They can get lice from each other, thanks to rampant over crowding and then treated with antibiotics which humans can later ingest.Salmon farmers and Congress are in talks about improving conditions, making the penned area more in the free range tradition. There are also different types.King or Chinook salmon have a rich flavor and firm flesh. This is excellent smoked but can be cooked another way as well. For more flavor and color consider there'd or sockeye kind,This makes the best sushi, because of these two attributes and works well with other strong flavors ,Coho or silver salmons the most used, especially in restaurants. It's a light orange in hue and has a mild flavor. It's basically what 's in cans and works great in light dishes such as salads. There is also the pink or bumpy and dog.The pink is an excellent source of protein yet it and chum or dog are ignored or dismissed by salmon snobs? The last is prized in Europe and is versatile in a number of dishes. If you want a dish that is both healthy and flavorful, consider salmon. it is perfect in a salad of summer vegetables or grilled with lemon. not only thAt but you'll be delivering a healthy dose of benefits to every part of your body. Enjoy salmon in any form,It really is a true treat.

Salmon- Is It Good Or Bad?

We all hear the plus side of eating salmon.Yet, surprisingly there is a down side to this healthy fish.It can be bad for you at times. What's the up side of this tasty dish? What's the bad side? Are there many benefits  - or just one or two?

Salmon is one of the most popular fishes to eat. Everyone love;s the rich flavor and the meaty flesh, which is more textured that most fish. It's also very versatile too. Salmon can be used as a main dish or added to a salmon. You can grill, char or broil it.The plus side of it it's good for strengthening your muscles as well as tissues. It is chock full of Omega-3 which will lower your cholesterol. It also is responsible for preventing the  eye disease macular degeneration. Eating salmon will improve skin tone as well as making your hair shiny. The fish is full of the necessary Vitamin D, which helps in preventing breast and prostrate cancers.

Yet  salmon, especially farmed can have a dark side. Fish raised in a contained environment can absorb PCBs,dioxins, dieldrin and toxaphene, Dieldrin is a banned pesticide that is easily soaked up by the fish .Why a pesticide is in a contained area  is puzzling, however it is there. Toxaphene again is another pesticide that still persists in the environment. Both it and dieldrin can cause liver, and kidney cancer. However the risks for these are small in comparison to the benefits. The best bet is getting wild salmon which costs a little more than the farmed but is trouble free.

Is salmon good or bad for you? Mostly it's good. The risks from chemicals are small and practically non existent if you buy the wild variety. It's a good food, excellent for your health as well as being just downright delicious. Don't stop eating it.

Flax Seed Wonder Food?

Everyone is always looking for the next wonder food. Is it a hybrid or enhanced fruit or veggie? Is it a new grain from a Third World nation? Surprisingly it's not any of these. It's flaxseed - ,a food or supplement that's been around for a few millennium. It's not only good but good tasting too.

Flaxseed was first grown in Mesopotamia and used widely in ancient cuisine.  Romans and Greeks added it into their foods and even back then had enriched diets. The French emperor, Charlemagne , passed laws for the every day  consumption of it. Flax was also used in the making of linen so it was doubly important  in  life.It was brought to this country and Canada in the 1700's. The latter is the top flax seed producer in the world  right now. Flax seeds' health benefits are still awesome. It is known to reduce the risk of certain cancers from colon to breast to prostrate. It also helps in reducing heart disease and diabetes along easing menopause symptoms.

Flax seed can be bought at any health food store, such as the GNC chain here in the States. It c is usually  bought already ground or in seed form. The ground form looks like saffron and has a slightly nutty taste. The seeds can be ground in any coffee grinder and stored in a dark cool place such as a pantry or even a fridge. This powdered form  can be baked into muffins and breads or blended into smoothies. Sprinkle some onto veggies for a lightly nutty flavor or mix a tablespoon of it  into chocolate syrup for a kind of hazelnut or nocciola taste. Try the seeds too in either as toppings or in salads

Flax seeds are the closest thing to a super food. Start using them in cooking and baking for healthier fare. They'll nt only improve the quality of life but also the quality of food.
