Punchy Punches For Halloween

This weelend is going ot be the weekend for Halloween parties. Instead of playing bartender and missing the party why not roll with the punches? Put out fancy bowls of alcoholic and non alcoholic ones. Your guests will get a big kick out of them as they're served ina spooky cup.

Start with a fun punch bowl/ Target has large witch's cauldrons which would be perfect for any kind of punch. They also sell a large clear pumpkin too.If you can;t find onen use your soup pot and soup ladle to pour out cups. You can also use one of your soup tureens (or buy one at an antique store) along with using the ladle that comes with it. Large ice buckets also work well too. What about the punch itself? A perfect spooky holiday sip is a blood red sangria. Start with a sweet red or rose and add the fruit fi the season  such as apples and pears. Orange and leon slices give ti a fresh tartness.  You could  increase the punch's potency by stirring in half a cup of a fruit brandy. Even though this sounds vile, sewer water punch is actually quite tasty - and kicky. It;s Dr Pepper mixed with vanilla flavored vodka and orange juice. Serve this potion in a clear bowl so they can see the "brown water." You can add gummy works if you want to (or Tootsie rolls to really amp up the "ewwwwww" factor.)

What about those little ones? Try a non alcoholic punch  with fun flavors for those tiny trick or treaters. Again serve it in a witch's cauldron or giant pumpkin. Since the main color fo the holiday is orange then think of a bright citrus punch. Combine orange soda (use an intensely flavored one like Fanta for the best taste) Add orange sherbert for more tang and a cup of pineapple juice for a refreshing zing. If you find this too sweet, then  sub in the soda with an orange flavored seltzer. This cuts down on the sugariness and even makes it more palatable for any adults attending. Another squeal inducing sip is the witch's brew punch. It's first mixing ginger ale with  pineapple and lemon juices. The last is added to keep from making th e drink too sweet,.Lime sherbet is added to give it that green color. Now for the special effects. You can put dry ice in a handmade trough wrought from tin foil around the cauldron. This will give it the effect of a smoking pot. You DO NOT want to put this ice in the punch. It's extremely dangerous to do so. Another special  and safer effect is just put a ring of battery operated votice lights around the base of the cauldon.

A good Halloween punch will add - what else - punch  to any party. It's a tasty cup, perfect with those party bites and mucnies. Brew up a cauldron for your holiday drinking.

Tasty Meals and Thank Yous

Our service people do a lot for us. They always have since our earliest days as a country. How to repay them? We can only do so in small gestures. Taking them to dinners or throwing them a party. It's a small way , but our way of saying thanks.

One way of honoring our servicemen is spending time with our veterans. It's always a treat when doughnuts and coffee come their way, especially for the  World War II and Korean War vets. Their stories are priceless and amazing. It's a history lesson from the men and women who caused history to happen. If it,s one of their birthdays, ask if you can bring in a cake or possibly even arrange a barbecue if the weather is still good. Nothing beats a few dogs, some homemade potato salad and beers.(or soda and iced tea if alcohol isn't allowed).Another idea is bringing the retired service people to dinner or, if you've become friendly home for a home cooked meal. Make them their favorite foods along with a favorite dessert. You could even organize dances that features music of the Big Band Era and the Fifties, There are websites that feature the foods of that era such as the Victory Cake, that's full of spices and raisins or a Soldier's Cake a kind of vanilla scratch cake. Serve it with a fruity punch. (and if they want to spike it so be it,Have a little fun).

As for our younger service people, a homecoming for a neighborhood hero is always a way of saying thank you. Get the entire neighborhood involved with everyone making the service person's favorite foods. The weather is still arm so it's still possible to cook out. Celebrate with steaks and ribs, kebobs and hamburgers. The hero's family will also appreciate it and the work that went into it. Another way is inviting them over for a dinner of favorite foods. A meal out is always a good choice too. Have a quiet dinner for four at a fancy restaurant . Pull out all the stops, Have champagne chilled and ready to be poured. If you can, get a quiet nook, so they're not on display. If it's possible or you know the chef, have a special dish created with beloved ingredients if that's possible. If they want a quiet supper alone with their spouse,  then treat them to  gift certificate to their favorite place and offer to babysit the kids. It'll give them a chance to rediscover themselves in a quiet ,romantic setting without any distractions. Bring homemade muffins or biscuits for breakfast the next morning.

Our service people deserve our utmost respect and thanks. We can repay them in small gestures such as a coffee or a night out. It's just a way of expressing our gratitude.

Pre-Party Ready

Now that the holiday party season has officially kicked off , party goers need to know one thing.Don;t go to any soiree or tree trimming party hungry. It pays to have a mini meal before hand. You'll feel better along with not getting drunk so quickly on an empty stomach.

One of my pre party rituals is always having a cup of simple vegetable broth and a few crackers before hand. This satisfies me until I actually eat again which is usually late .A cup of hot , steamy broth is also fortifying.I'm satisfied along with knowing I won;t wolf down all sorts of rich party foods later on . Nothing is more uncomfortable than the after effects of gorging on an empty stomach . Most nutritionists also recommend eating other low calories snacks such as raw carrots and celery sticks, Having a snack of these three or four hours before the actual feast will help you keep sated. If you want more protein spread a dab of peanut butter on the celery . It can also go on crackers too. Cheese and crackers are another good go to pre festivity snack as are grapes. If you know you;re eating very late - anywhere from nine PM to midnight, then think about heating up a light soup for yourself. Any vegetable soup is good or even a ramen noodle soup. They;'re light  and filling, able to stave your appetite until the later hours.

Another plus about eating early is that it helps with not getting drunk. If you have a boozy night ahead then plan on carbo loading before hand. Again , a cup of Ramen noodles is probably your best bet. It's mild but filling. You can even add a beaten egg to it for more protein.Pizza surprisingly is a pre partier's best friend, but this may be too much before a big do. Try a simple grilled cheese or better yet a sandwich filled with one or two slices of any kind of cold cut. instead Also just a toasted muffin, bagel or English muffin will  help in you absorbing that run punch or champagne cocktail. Surprisingly a baked potato is another good mini meal before all that holiday punch.Potatoes are pure starch which can easily absorb the alcohol.Just make a simple one, butter on top with salt and pepper, Leave the cheese and chili for another day. Ddespite what the old wives tales say, drinking milk before boozing is not a good idea. The alcohol will curdle it on your stomach leaving you nauseous and ready to hurl. Keep away from it and ice cream.

Eating before a big holiday party is a must.  Have a small sandwich or a cup of broth You'll feel better and won't arrive hungry, ready to gobble down anything.

Toasty Party Drinks

Somehow imbibing in a cold party cocktail doesn't sound so hot , especially if you or your guests have slogged through sleet and snow. Bring some cheer and warmth into the picture by mixing up some hot ciders and punches. These Victorian drinks have lasted through many a Christmas season and you can bring them back.the best part, they're far from being Victorian. They have spice and sass along with a good kick.In other words they are the perfect holiday libation. One of the best hot drinks is mulled cider. This is simply taking regular Apple cider and mixing it with all spice berries along with clove cinnamon and some nutmeg. For a more fresh from the tree flavor, add an apple studded with cloves.A cup of dark rum gives it the much needed kick. You can float orange slices on top for some color..If you want a pulpier cider, add some fresh apple juice straight from your juicer.Another variation is adding amontidillo sherry as well as honey , again preferably dark to temper the taste. Cider can include the hard alcoholic variety or applejack and it too, can be heated. It does have to have the soft cider as a base however you can add more of the hard stuff and less of the soft version for a boozier version.Spices are still required as well.If you're having a more intimate party of six or eight you can think about serving applejack toddies. It's boiling regular cider with with cloves and cinnamon. The applejack is then added and the mug is then garnished with cinnamon stick. Hot punches are a nice way of warming up a crowd ,both figuratively and literally..One of the best is Charles Dickens, version.,Although everyone knows this great English author as the creator of that holiday classic "A Christmas Carol" he is also the originator of tasty punch, worthy of old Fezziwig himself. It is a heady blend of both rum and brandy along with brown sugar and lemon? It does come with a warning. The punch has to be lit with a match after it has simmer for a few minutes over a low flame. Also there is the added step of chilling it overnight and then rewarming it for your guests..There is also the Smoking Bishop punch mention in A Christmas Carol, and it had been around for at least one hundred years before Dickens even mentioned it in the story.Coleridge even called it a drink divine..This ruby port mixed with lemons and oranges along with a variety of spices. There is the usual. Clove and cinnamon but Ginger is added for zing as is mace.Red wine is used as temperer of sorts and also there is sugar thrown in.This is a more involved recipe because the fruit has to studded with cloves and then roasted. Two pots are needed to cook up both the red wine and spices. There is a 24 hour cooling time before it's reheated and served. An easier drink is the Jamaican tea punch.Basically it's brewed tea with Jamaican rum added. Fresh squeezed lemon or orange juice is added along with some sugar for flavoring. Nothing beats a cup of mulled cider or hot punch. On a blustery snowy night. These bring heat to any party ,perfect fr thawing out frozen guests. They reflect tradition. But also the liveliness that comes with that. .

A Hot Drink For A Hot Time

The Memorial Day weekend brings the start of the summer party season.Drinks abound during this time .However they're usually watered down with club soda or just chilled white wine. It's time to think outside the usual bottle. It's time to add some punch - literally. This was the topic of yesterday's Pour column in the Dining section of Wednesday's New York Times. Eric Asimov wrote about changing up the usual summer drinks. He mentions some unusual choices yet they do fit in perfectly with those barbecued steaks and salads. A summer punch is always a fun extra to any party. It's rarely served during the colder months ,being the star of many a holiday party.Yet it's refreshing and unique when served during a hot weather gathering.Mr. Asimov uses the punch from the restaurant Prime Meats. It's called Too Hot To Hoot.It mixes the richness of a good bourbon with elderberry tea along with Angostura bitters and fresh strawberries and limes. It's a tasty fun drink that would go well with any grilled meat. Of course other drinks are also spotlighted and also work well for those who don't want a cup of punch.Mr.Asimov recommends a glass of chilled Chianti .This popular classic is usually associated with pasta however it's the perfect foil for a juicy grilled steak. There are other red wines that go well with burgers and ribs such as barbera , dolcetto and Valpolicetto.Roses and white wines,Summer standards are also good but try the lesser Pinot grigio such as Elena Walch, Alois Lageder of the Northeastern Italian vineyards.Another choice is a rose champagne such as Cerdon Bugey from theRenardat Fache. it's perfect go along with chicken stays or grilled salmon. The holiday season is upon us and with it a time to celebrate.Enjoy the warm summer nights with punch or champagne.?Look at the warm weather moon with a glass of Pinot Grigio or Chianti! it's the season to enjoy good drinks and good grilled Led or barbecued food!
