Good Friday Request

With today being Good Friday, the usual question about food and drink is being replaced with a request. Consider your neighbors this Easter and Passover season as well as family. Feed and nourish them if they are having difficulty feeding their own. Lend them a couple of dollars or share bounty from upcoming gardens this summer.

This is Holy Season by the generous, thoughtful, and considerate the rest of the year too.

A Simple Good Friday Wish

Today is ome of the holiest days of The Christian calendar. It is a time for reflection as well as observing Christ's Crucifixion and Entombment. It's also a day to relfect on what we can do to improve the lives and diets of those around us.

The weather may be warming but there are still hungry families who need food. Consider volunteering at your food pantry or soup kitchen. Plan your garden to include overage for those in need.

Today is a somber day of reflection. Think about what you can do for people whi are not as lucky as yourself..

Good Friday Traditions

This Good Friday ,remember  the traditions that make this day holy and somber .Many give up meat ,.A few even forgo dairy and eggs. It's up to you on how you want to observe.

I relied on a family recipes noodles with eggs,  from my Swabian German American grandfather's family. It was always made on Good Friday and was a filling dinner after visiting the church.I made it vegan by using Just Egg and then took a traditional route by subbing in spaetzle. It's served with peaches , as many German dishes are served with fruit instead of vegetables.

Today is a day full of somberness and prayer. Pray for those around the world that they can have an Eastrr weekend full of traditional foods and rites wherever they are.

Relying On Tradition

The holidays teach us one thing - to rely on tradition. It's what guides us through celebrations and holy days. This also includes time homored recipes used in many an Easter or Passover meal.

This was on my mind as I bought spaetzle and risotto at Aldi's today. It's a Swabian German custom to have noodles and eggs on Good Friday, one of the holiest and most somber days of the Christian calendar. I'm taking a family tradition and updating it by subbing in the spaeztle for egg noodles. (although I suspect the original dish used them.) It's served with a side of sliced peaches as all German dishes have some kind of fruit incorporated in the dish.As for Easter it's a new tradition of risotto and fresh asparagus This replaces the old one of again the Swabian influenced ham served with beans and potato salad. I've made this every year for the past few years. Yes, I'll bake the Easter lamb cake  , following in my Mom's step. I'll mix in the Dream Whip  as she did for a denser, richer cake, but add my own spins. There willbe Just Egg instead of real eggs, almond milk instead of cow's. The icing will have vegetable shortening like hers in it to give it the perfect texture for the crumb coat and rosettes.I may give it a dash of either lemon or grapefruit juice just to zing it up.

Others are also relying on family recipes. Many will be observing Passover starting April 5th. There will be variations on moms' and grandmothers' brisket recipes.  Home chefs may add cayenne pepper for some spike and heat.Others will try a brown sugar rub that gives the surface a crackly crust.. Tzimmes, the carrot and stewed prune side dish is always served  but the family recipe will get some new ingredients. It could be lemon or lime juice to cut all that sweetness or maybe star anise .Kugel that Passover staple may be savory on a few tables this year. It's suually a sweet dish but there are several savory ones that feature spinach and mushrooms. Easter is usually ham or lamb. A few home chefs are eager to try Eric Kim's pineapple ham featured in Wednesday's New York Times Food section. This is like a retro dish from the Fifties, complete with golden pineapple rings. The glaze is made with Dijon mustard ,brown sugar and fresh juice from both pineapples and lemons. Some may use their granny's recipe and add a ginger ale based glaze on it. as for th elamb, it's usually baked with rosemary sprigs.and fresh lemon juice. There will be updating with an olive oil rub or the addition of red wine vinegar.

Tradition guides us.it guides our cooking. It gives the template for traditionak dishes that can be given new spins and updates.

Good Friday Prayers

it is Good Friday , the holiest day of the Christian calendar. All of our prayers should go to those suffering around the world and especially in the Ukraine and those displaced elsewhere.

Hope and pray that they can enjoy their Palm Sunday and Easter without fear and with a good meal. The same goes for those observing Passover.

Some of us have already begun our Easter baking yet our prayers are not only for a well turned out cake but for everyone to enjoy a holiday full of sweets and Spring hopefulness.

A Giving Good Friday

It's Good Friday and all Christians are observing this holy day of observation. We think of Christ and His sacrifices but we should also think of His generosity. Planting a Spring garden for not just yourself but for others exemplifies this .

Think of others as you plant. Aim for overage where you can donate your harvest or give to neighbors or family in need. It's a good thing because everyone loves fresh fruit and veggies. It's also good for kids to show them that there's a world beyond processed food and sweets. They can even help in picking tomatoes and strawberries. If you're turning that bounty into pickling and jams , remember to make a few jars extra too. They make nice gifts for any essential workers you may know.

This is a day for reflection and sacrifice. It's also a day of planning and how you can help your community. Think about this when you start planning your Spring garden.

A Thoughtful Good Friday

This Good Friday is one where we are all thoughtful and prayerful. Our minds and hearts along with our souls  are with those who are sick with the Covid-19 virus along with those with other illnesses. Our thoughts and prayers are also those on the front lines too. If you want to do a good deed this Easter season along then donate food, whether pizzas, doughnuts or sandwiches to our brave doctors and nurses.  Do the same too  for Passover and Ramadam too. Be grateful for these healthcare professionals  who are giving up their holidays for us.  Thank those cashiers and food stockers at your grocery stores. They too are on the front lines as our the truckers, farmers, produce pickers and food plant workers.

This is the day to be thoughtful. Think of what you can do for your community. Sew masks, Donate food. Treat workers to a much needed slice of pizza or cup of coffee. Pray for an end to this, where everyone emerges happy and healthy.

A Thoughtful Good Friday

Good Friday ,Passover and Easter begin and end this weekend. These days should remind us of those suffering in the world. We should reflect on how we can make their lives better in big ways and in small. Think about the good you want to do during this season of hope and rebirth. It could be helping out or growing produce for your local food pantry .It could be throwing a much deserved welcome home party for returning vets or treating them to a dinner out. It could just be becoming a lunch time companion for an elderly neighbor living on his or her own. Or sharing an inclusion dinner with neighbors of different religions and backgrounds.

Have your kids get involved too. They learn by watching and your actions will be picked up and made a part of their routine.

This weekend is a time for worship along with celebrating. Make it also a time for planning good deeds for your community. Give others hope and a reason to celebrate.

Good Friday Thoughts

Good Friday is a day of reflection and thinking of others. It should be very apparent this year with the protesters and LGBTQ bans from certain chain restaurants. They need not just our support but  alimentary support too.

If you're a restaurant owner think about donating food to your local demonstrations. Sandwiches  and small salads will be fine along with cold bottles of water. If it's more organized, think about getting together with a few other restaurant owners to form a buffet. The hot dishes will be appreciated if there's rainy or cool Spring weather.Even chains such as McDonald's or Wendy 's can participate.

As for tolerance, everybody should be allowed to eat where they want to eat or order a wedding cake.  Think about tolerance and how the New Testament emphasizes that. Protest eateries and shops that promote exclusion. A big enough backlash can close down one place.

Be thoughtful for this Good Friday and practice tolerance and acceptance all year round.

A Thoughtful Good Friday

Good Friday is a day of reflection about life and what one should do with it. It's also a day to think about improving other's lives and the surrounding world.

One way is, as always, donating to your local food pantry .This could mean buying cans of food and boxes of cereal, but they more obvious is apportioning your garden and growing extra fruit, vegetables and even herbs This way families, especially those with children will get the nutrition, vitamins and mineral they so desperately need for growing.  There is also nothing like the taste of fresh produce to improve any dish or dessert too.

The way to improve your world is to try to buy local and shrink your carbon footprint. Luckily, we are coming into the Spring growing and summer harvesting season. It will be easier to buy fruit and veggies from local farms and farmer's markets. Also joining organizations to help clean up land and waterways is another good deed. We can also push for turning our abandoned factories and warehouses into urban farms, where not only is there food but also jobs.

Today is a day of reflection. Think about what you can do to improve the lives and world around you. Then act on it.

Good Friday Good Deeds

It is Good Friday, one of the most solemn and reflective days of the Christian calendar. It is the ay when most, especially the Catholics give up meat. It should also be the day we give up some of our other foods, donating them to the poor and needy.

If you have any cans or even just want to buy some for your local soup kitchen please do so. charity doesn't just apply to the other holidays . It also applies to this weekend as well. Share cupcakes or cake if you're baking or even an Easter bread. Spend the day with the homeless. It's a great lesson for the kids. If they received a ton of candy from relatives as well as the Easter Bunny , himself, then have them share the overage with kids form the shelter.Learning to share is a great gift and they may even make new friends along the way.

This is a day for reflection and prayer. Reflect on how good and abundant your life is. Pray for those who are not so fortunate  and then share your Easter bounty with them.

Good Friday Thoughts

Today is Good Friday, the holiest day of the Christian calendar. It is also the most somber, being remembered as the day Christ was crucified. For millennia Christians, have forgone favorite meats  as with today, sticking to a strictly fish and vegetable meals. It's a day to reflect about others who have forego favorite dishes , especially nutritional ones on a daily basis. Use today to reflect on how to contribute to your local food pantry. One of the best is expanding your garden to include a bumper crop to give away.,Also think about a neighborhood food drive or even bake  sale where neighbors get together to gather food and raise money for the community's less fortunate.

As we think about Easter Sunday's dinner and treats , let's also think of others who can't afford a ham or lamb along with chocolates and cakes.

Good Friday Lessons

today is Good Friday, one of the most solemn days of the Christian calendar. While it is a day of observance, it's also a day of reflection. Those who will have a happy food and treat filled Easter should think of others less fortunate. We may be heading into warmer weather but there are still families who need to use food banks and soup kitchens.Volunteer instead of a day at the park or beach.Donate what you can from your garden.Fresh fruit and vegetables are always needed and appreciated. This weekend, remember those who still don"t have.Keep them in your thoughts and prayers but also in your plans to help others.

Good Friday And Fasts

today is Good Friday. Most Christians around the world have already observed the day. What you can do is try fasting or light eating along with donating to your local or church pantry. Even skipping a small meal can help the body, purifying it. if you do feel hungry then broth and crackers can alleviate the pangs. Most religions do have a fasting period. it's not only a sign of respect, it 's also helps the body detoxify. however you observe this Good Friday, keep in mind those who do not have. donate whatever food you have to your local food pantry.

Good Friday Observances

Today is Good Friday , a day of observing the holiest and most somber of the Christian calendar days. During this time we should think o others less fortunate and remember that they struggle to put food on the table. even though we are heading towards warmer weather church food pantries still need to be stocked. help fill them up with the fruits and vegetables of the upcoming season. As you go to your local farm or farmers market buy not only for your family but for one extra as well. Shop healthy not only for yourself but for others as well!

Good Friday - Day of Fasting And Observance

Today is Good Friday , one of the most holiest of the Christian holidays. It’s a time when some Catholics fast while others , including most of the Protestant sects forgo meat. I will be observing the holiday as well by not eating meat and settling on the traditional Piedmontese style asparagus for dinner . Some prefer to go the fish and seafood route which is allowed . Some of the stricter , such as the Greek Orthodox usually forbid dairy products too or fast for a certain period of time today .

Observe the day whatever Christian beliefes you hold.

Good Friday Observances

Just a short entry today since it is Good Friday.

We're having the traditional Piedmontese tomatoes and eggs (the Sicilians make something similar with green peppers) tonight since we can not have any meat.

Observe the day.
