Barcelona's A True Classic Revisited

Very few restaurants make it to their ninetieth birthday but Barcelona' sin Garfield, New Jersey  has. This is a throwback to eateries from decades ago. friends and family gather around tables or the bar for good old fashioned Italian and American dishes. You can get everythign form a thin crust pizza to a hamburger.

You can pass by it if you're driving quickly. It;s in a working class neighborhood in a town that was a suburb of Passaic. The atmosphere alone is worth the visit. Friends and family gather there, especially on a Friday nioght to share a communal bowl of salad and drink martinis as they play along with "Jeopardy". The food though is phenomenal and there's so much to choose from. There are the Southern Italian classics , from pizza to spaghetti to just meatball  dishes.Ravioli and lasagna lovers will go wild for the vast array of sauce  choices You can order hot or cold subs along with a variety of soups. There's also American food too. Their open steak sandwich is served with fries and a salad along with a hamburger and mushroom.

I ordered the small onion pizza with a side of anchovies. (My dinner mates didn not want an anchovy pie). Every inch of the pie was covered with think strings of onion. Add the anchovies and I was in heaven. The crust is crispy and thin, The cheese and sauce were not overpowering as with some pies.

We  also ordered classic spaghetti with a grapefruit sized meatball on top. This is what pasta lovers dream of . The sauce was a tasty blend of tomato and tomato paste, rich with garlic and oregano. Their spaghetti with mushrooms  sounds just as tasty and will be tried on thei next trip. The prices are pretty good with $9 for a small plain pizza  while the spaghetti was $8.50. All meat  dishes are under fifteen dollars. There is even a dessert menu of Italian and American favorites.

If you're in Garfield for either lunch ro dinner come to Barcelona's It's good old fashioned food at good, old fashioned prices. It's like going to a family dinner.

Barcelona's is located at 38 Harrison Ave ,Garfield New Jersey, a block south of the Garfield Walmart. Go to www.Barcelonasnj.com for more info

Spring Light

One of the best aspects of Spring is that there will be a wealth of green ingredients. It makes for not only fresher eating but also healthier eating too.All those newly sprouted veggies hold the promise of more nutrition along with flavor.

Asparagus is big right now. It's a sure sign of Spring and warmer days ahead. It also makes for a great light eating. One spear is only three calories!!!! One way to have them is grilled after being marinated in olive oil and dusted with sea salt and fresnly ground pepper. A more decadent way is Piedmontese style. It's serving steamed asparagus with  a butter sauce and having the spears topped with grated Parmesan and sliced hard boiled eggs. A healthier spin is using Melt instead of butter and vegan cheese. Nix the eggs.Peas are another Spring veggie thar's light in taste and calories One cup  is only one hundred eighteen calories. A tasty recipe is the Italian risi bisi. This is a delicious marriage of the peas and arborio rice. Chopped onions are also cooked in , first in  olive oil with the rice and then vegetable broth. It's a refreshing change up from the usual tomato risotto. Of course mushrooms are abundant during this season too. You can easily make a risotto with cremini and portobellos. On warmer days, grill them on the barbecue for a flavorful alternative to beef or turkey burgers.

Spinach is also a Spring veggie. This is one of the best green ingredients you could have. It's great for eyes, and skin along with helping in weight loss and reduces hypertension. It is also the most versatile too.  You can easily turn it into a tasty and chic salad. Think of combining it with salmon and hard boiled eggs in a low calorie but protein packed salad. An herb laced vinaigrette is the best dressing for this. Of course there's nothing like a crispy spinach frittata, a take on the classic spinach omelet. Add sliced cherry tomatoes and vegan Parmesan for a tasty and quick lunch.Mix the greens with another Spring classic - mushrooms for a pasta sauce that's different and unique. Saute sliced baby bellas in olive oil and garlic and then add washed and dried baby spinach leaves. Cook until leaves turn dark green and wilt and serve with any kind of pasta. It 's wonderful with angel hair or spaghetti but you could also mix it in with rotelli or penne. Celery and carrots are also Spring veggies that come in the latter part of the season. These are great gracing salads but think of them in light vegetable soups.

It's Spring. It's a time for fresh and lighter eating. Use the bounty of spring for this greener, healthier way of cooking.

Food Pantry in The Summer

Even though it's warm outside there's still a need for food pantries across the country. Poverty and the need for food doesn't just go away in summer and come back in winter. There are families across the US that still need decent, home cooked meals no matter what the temperature is. They need fresh ingredients for  healthy living.

What are some of the items that can go to a food pantry now? Cases of bottled water are always needed. Everyone from the young to the elderly need hydration especially when the weather has been scorching as it has been  in the big cities like New York and Chicago as of late. Also fruit ades would be appreciated as are fresh lemons and limes for making those drinks. Easy to prepare ingredients such as greens as veggies help as well. For anyone running  a farm stand or small farm , think about donating some of your crop to your local town or church food bank. The same stands for fresh fruits too. These are much better than sugary snacks.

Other donation ideas are breads and low sodium cold cuts to make sandwiches for picnics or just to create an easy lunch or dinner. If any butcher or owner of a poultry farm or fish market reads this then think about giving some of your meats too to local food banks. Cold cuts are great but fresh meat and fish is a better warm weather diet.Poultry farmers, if they can also donate eggs, do so . These are always wanted and a good source of protein. Everyone else should alos give boxes of the basics such as rice and pasta. These can be mixed with meats and veggies to create a tasty meal that can be stretched out for days or just simply frozen.

Just because it's summer doesn't mean that the food pantries close down. Hunger and poverty happen all year round.Remember that when you go food shopping now. Add something extra for those who need it to your cart or wagon.
