A Delicious New Season

Autumn in New York is amazing. It's Fashion Week and a variety of film festivals. It 's the start of the new season at Lincoln Center. The temps  go down and the humidity dissipates.Best of all, it's a new season of new restaurants and menus. There are new spins on classic recipes and new dishes by famed chefs.

The New York Times Food section highlighted this in their section today.Regulars such as Julia Moskin and Florence Fabricant interviewed chefs  as well as acquiring a sneak peek into the culinary scene.none of the most intriguing is the arrival of new food markets. The city is following in Boston's Chicago's and Philadelphia's footsteps.Food halls cater to a variety of tastes. There is no snobbery there with fancy foods and fancier prices.Chelsea Market , the first and oldest of all the city's food hall is expanding. A division of Black Seed Bagels,Black Seed Appetizers will open. There is also the brand new 8sia will have such stalls as Rice On! and Debutea which will serve bubble teas as well as fruit and even cheese teas. Two others,The Market Line and The Deco  Wil have smaller shops offering inter national fare.

Foodies and gourmets will enjoy the opening of several new restaurants. Davide, named for Davide Sorrento, a young Italian photographer who died in 1997, will be run by father-son chef duo,Larry and Marc. They will be introducing pinsa,an oval Roman flatbread made with a variety of toppings not unlike pizza. Australian chef,Sean Hergatt reimagines  classic American recipes in his new eatery, Vestry in the Dominick Hotel,in Hudson Square. Famed chef, Alfred Portale, the chef and partner of the famed Gotham and Grill strikes out on his own with Portale, a salute to his Italian-American heritage.Manhattan chefs are also making moves . Victoria Blamey is taking over for Chef Portale The The Gotham Bar and Grill. She is changing everything from recipes to even the cutlery and China.

New York in the fall is a magical time.Enjoy all it has to offer on a culinary level. It is a tasty kalaidoscope  of flavors and dishes.

Chelsea's Hip Bakeries

Chelsea is now one of New York City's hottest and hippest neighborhood. This is where you cool restaurants and shops along with the celebs and stars that shop there. The area also boasts a wide array of bakeries as well. Two of the most famous is Billy's and Blossoms.. These provide both tourists and locals with a wide array of cakes, cookies, and that still trendy treat, the cupcakes.

Billy's Bakery located on Ninth Ave , between 21st and 22nd Street, It also has locations in again the still popular Tribeca as well as The Plaza Food Hall near midtown. The bakery supposed was started by two friends however there is also the understory that the bakery was started by the famed Magnolia's bakery's workers who stole that bakery's most famous recipes. Whatever is the real story, the cakes and cookies are heavenly . Their mini cheesecakes are packed with flavor. The chocolate one is full of dense rich, crumbs while the texture is super creamy. The cakes all have a homemade from the Fifties taste and look. The cookie sandwiches. filled with homemade butter cream are to die for and a local favorite.

A few doors down is Blossom, a bakery with a twist. All their products are made without butter , eggs and milk. It's a division of the famed Blossom Vegan Restaurant (which is right across the street from the bakery)Unlike Billy';s they offer savory treats such as the Breton version of the croissant Koiugn Amann- a fine feat to pull off because regular ones are laced with butter.Their cakes are varied, as are their cupcakes. The vanilla ones are the best,It's a dense old fashioned cake made with a buttery blob of icing on top. The chocolate ones are intense and really don't need the frosting. However the best is Blossom's biscotti. These are not the traditional cylinder shaped ones but large spread out almond cookies that resemble oatmeal cookies. These are a mix of almond and crunch  = sheer perfect in every  bite.

Whether you love in trendy Chelsea or just visiting stop by either Billy's or Blossom for a cupcake and a coffee. Both have different world views and recipes yet a common thread  to make the best baked goods. Their goal has been met . Go to either or both for a satisfying bite of sweetness.

A Good Taste Of France

Yesterday I wrote about the goodness of French food and with good reason. I had just come off a haute cuisine high after eating at Le Grainne in Manhattan's Chelsea. This was followed up with a quick trip to one of New York's best patisseries, La Bergamote a block away. I was in French food heaven.A bistro lunch ending with buttery pastries.

Le Grainne's is probably one of Manhattan's best kept secrets however its a huge local hangout. There is a line at its' door on Sunday morning which makes it impossible to get a table at the small bistro. baby carriages are literally lined up outside its; one wall and the there is no end of customers. I had to wait until a Friday to get in there. I can see why. There are buckwheat crepes stuffed with everything from ratatouille to champignons to ham and cheese. there are melt in your mouth quiches along with the traditional croque monsieur's.Even the accompanying salad that came with my crepe was perfection. The dressing was an almond infused oil and vinegar that mad eme want more. Even the bread and butter was divine. with fresh unsalted butter that tasted more like cream. One day I will go there and try dessert or better yet one of those huge Gallic cups of fresh hot cocoa.

Down th e block from Le Grainne is the La Bergamote. This is a must see (as is Le Grainne) for anyone vi sting Manhattan during the holidays. Try the unusual tangerine Danish which is a buttery sweet tart combination that melts in your mouth. I also love their chocolate croissants which are flaky and full of chocolate and almonds.La Bergamote sells all sorts of coffees, teas and iced drinks too which I didn't get along with candies (which I did buy/ they r;e so cute and decadently delicious . They'll make nice X-mas gifts)

If you' r; in Manhattan for the holidays stop in Chelsea and visit Ninth Ave. it;s full of Gallic flair and food thanks to Le Grainne and La Bergamote. This is where you can get a slice of French foodie heaven .
