Take a teaspoon of the mix and then blend it with a third of a cup of fresh lemon juice, and a third of a cup of olive oil. Fresh garlic or garlic powder can b e added. Vigorously whisk everything together. It can be served on fresh greens but also goes well on chilled broccoli, string beans or tomatoes.Keep in mind that this is great on grilled veggies too.Marinated all sorts soft veggie sin this and toss on a hot grill,Za atar is easy to make or you can buy a jar of it.

Warming Up A Cool Derby Day

Even though the temps say winter it's Spring and it's the first Saturday in May. That means it's the Kentucky Derby during a season that's unseasonably chilly. How to celebrate? With hot tasty Derby dishes.

Louisville right now is 62 degrees It's not exactly freezing there but it's not exactly warm. Most  of the country is unseasonably cold right now. It's the perfect time for a Hot Brown, the classic Louisville dish. This is a turkey bacon and cheese sandwich bathed in a piping hot cheese sauce. This is the perfect dish for a cold day. The sauce is a mix of cheddar and Parmesan but to give it more fire sub in pepperjack for that fiery kick. There's a pinch of nutmeg for more flavor but this can be hot pepper can be used to give a little more heat.Burgoo is another Kentucky recipe. This is a variation of Brunswick stew or boeuf Bourgignon and has a mix of pork beef and chicken in ir. These are cooked with okra, celery , bell peppers ,corm and onions. Smoky barbecue sauce is added along with a dash of hot sauce and garlic. You could add red pepper flakes for more bite. The same can be said of barbecue. This is pulled pork slow cooked in a mix of vinegar ,barbecue sauce and brown sugar. Add some hot pepper in there for warming heat.

The Derby is known for it's famed mint juleps. These are fine on a warm May day but you need something warming when that May day turns frosty. Think a cozy bourbon toddy. This is  mixing bourbon with hot water and honey. It's the perfect cure for a winter cold but it's also great to warm up too. Hot buttered bourbon is another toe warming drink. It's taking the Kentucky brew and mixing it with butter and apple cider. Warming spices such as cloves , cinnamon and ginger give it more fire as a dash of honey balances everything out. You could also give out cups of Kentucky coffee. This is the perfect marriage of coffee and bourbon.Like it's cousin,Irish coffee, it can be topped with a thick head of whipped cream. Sugar is added to sweeten it. Have it with slices of Kentucky transparent pie. This classic Bluegrass State dessert is sort of like chess pie except it doesn't have the cornmeal added. It is a blend of eggs mixed with white and brown sugar, heavy cream, melted butter and vanilla.

It's a chilly Derby day. Yet you can warm up with hot dishes and even hotter drinks to make you feel toasty inside and out. It'll make the day feel like a seasonable warm May day.

Fiery Flavors For Nippy Weather

The weather is getting decidedly colder. It's time to add some heat to our food to warm us to our toes. what better than Aubrey D's mustards and hot sauces. These will definitely give some fire to even the most boring of dishes.

Aubrey d' is a Canadian company , bringing some serious heat to our chilly neighbors to the north. Their brand Rebel is known for their tangy and chili laced potato chips. They push the envelope with these with such flavors as chipotle, habanero and jalapeno. Now they bring that fire to their mustards. I couldn't resist their lure.  There are two new flavors laced with jalapeno, horseradish mustard and honey mustard along with their plain kind. I also tried their Rebel Hot sauce and Chipotle Hot sauce. Those are going to be perfect in my crock pot chili amping it to a four alarm dish, making it super hot.

I tried all three mustards along with the chipotle sauce on my veggie dogs. The honey mustard has a sweetness to it as well as a definite bite. It was interesting on the dogs but I think it would definitely boost the flavor of soft pretzels or pretzel bites for a fun hors d'ouevres. The hot dogs really got spiked when they were dipped in the gritty horseradish flavor which resembles Grey Poupon and the jalapeno. which has a smooth creamy texture. These would be perfect with a bologna sandwich , especially on a kaiser roll. I also plan on using them as a dipping sauce for pigs in blankets and will even baste the dough with both mustards before adding the franks and baking. Chicken wings and nuggets will also be good  dipped in their fiery goodness too.You could also marinate chicken or even pork, shrimp, or beef in them. It's just mixing half a cup of  olive oil with half a cup of mustard. marinate for a few hours and then grill or roast.

If you want to add zing to your sandwiches and meal, then definitely use Aubrey d's Rebel brand sauces and mustards. They know how to zing up any dish and make a meal memorable. Try these fiery gems today!
