Granita An Easy Summer Treat

What to serve after an elegant dinner or a rowdy barbecue? Granita - that cool Italian iced treat that's easy to make and fun to eat. The best part about it is it's a snap to make. You don't need an ice cream or slushie maker. All it takes is an ice cube tray and some creativity. That's it for a great after dinner or any time treat.

Basically granita is nothing more than ice that's been "shredded" with a fork. It takes it name from grainy because of its' coarse texture. A smoother ice would be called sorbet but this variation of Italian ice should have some kind of crunch thank to the frozen shreds or granules in it. Another plus is that it doesn't require any fancy equipment. You can use an old ice cube tray or pie pan to freeze the mixture. Then use a fork preferably to scrape the ice off the sides and bottom every half hour until serving.

Like ice cream or sorbet granita can be made with any flavor. The most popular is espresso however you can also use regular coffee or a mix of coffee and chocolate syrup. You can also use the fruit of the season too. Fresh picked strawberries are delicious as are blueberries and blackberries. You just have to cook a simple syrup with just water and granulated sugar.Puree the fruit and add to mix as it's cooking. If you want you can leave a few coarsely chopped fruit pieces too for added texture.Lemon or lime granita is a tangy twist on the treat. You can just freeze already made lemonade or limeade or add the unsweetened juices to a simple syrup.

Granita is the easiest summer treat to make. Take a simple mix of whatever you want and just throw it in to an ice cube tray or pie pan. Shred it occasionally and come out with an easy fun dessert , perfect for these hot days!

The Lushest Ice Cream Ever!

This is the season for ice craem, and especially ice cream on a stick.Usually most people will reach for their favorite Good Humor bar and be satisfied with the eclair or the toasted almond kikinds. Hold on. There' a new bar in town andi it's beyond tasty. It's lush . It's decadent. It's magnum. It's amazing.

I was a sucker fo the Magnum ads. They showed this creamy vanilla bar coated not only with this rich Dove like chocolate but also a layer of caramel underneath. I had to try them .They sounded and looked like frozen decadence. Magnum Ice Pops were expensive (although luckily there was a store coupon for it and I got over a dollar off) and the box only has three gold wrapped bars in it. However the price is worth it THis is the most decadent iced cream ever coated wih a crunchy thick layer of chocolate and gooey caramel. The sucker was history in five minutes flat. It was that good.

Magnum comes in four different flavors, I had the double caramel, but there is also double chocolate , white, dark and almond crunch Magnum is new to the States. It was started in 1989 by Unilever in Holland and spread throughout Europe and Asia. There are some yummy flavored Magnum bars beign sold all over th e world. ( the US was the last to acquire them)In Britain , they have one with honey and cinnamon. Australia has a peppermint flavore along with ones that have a cool Sixties theme. Karl Lagerfeld has even directed a Magnum commercial starring Rachel Bilson in France.

I'm sure Magnum will catch on here. The ice cream bar is one of the best in a long time. It's rich .It's decadent. It's the perfect ice cream treat on a hot summer's night.

Macaroons The New "It" Dessert

Just like with fashion and Hollywood, foods, especially sweets go through trends. The new "it girl" this year is the macaroon. Like any celebutante, it's petite and sweet , along with being sophisticated and French. It's being served at runway and birthday parties alike. Everyone from the super models to your neighborhoods five hear old is happily munching on this sweet these days.

Macaroons have a long history. They were first made in Italy as early as the 1400s. Their name comes from the Italian ammaccare which mean to beat. Almonds and eggs whites were first beaten together and then baked. They became a Parisian favorite (and nowadays French staple) when Catherine de'Medici married Henri II in 1533. The very first ones were more like amaretti cookies with a crispy shell and a softy chewy interior.Coconut was later added to the recipe by the Italian Jews which are still popular today for Passover.

Macaroons. are now replacing the cupcake as the sweet of choice.More and more bakeries are featuring the French style ones. These are light airy crisps, either as large as your palm or as small as a silver dollar. There's usually a jam, cream or chocolate ganache filling. The treats are being bake d in such yummy flavors as chocolate, raspberry , lemon, lime and strawberry. There is also the traditional vanilla almond one too for purists.

Macaroons are the new celeb of the dessert table. Who can resist them though? They're in fun colors with a tasty filling. They're also light and airy so you do n;t feel guilty gobbling up a few.
