Fall Refresh

 Now that we're on the cusp of fall it's time for a seasonal refresh.That means assessing and tossing, revamping and planning. It's time to get ready for the big baking and cooking season ahead.

As I've always pointed out every September, this is the time to remodel the kitchen, Do it now before November arrives. Replace the stove fridge and dishwasher now. right now Lowe's is having an excellent sales on stoves and you can easily get a Whirlpool model for four hundred dollars off The store is also having big sales on their refrigerators and a variety of dishwashers. This is also the time to invest in a good air fryers. These will come in very handy for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners when there are endless sides to make. Target has a pretty lavender one for $28.00 .This can fry up little sides like Brussels sprouts and smashed potatoes For bigger jobs think about the Ninja for $128, also at Target . Its' fry basket  is perfect for cooking yams and potatoes as well as baking cakes .It's really a versatile addition that you can use all year round  - not just in the fall.Another cool weather addition is the immersion blender. This is perfect for turning chunky soups into creamy ones, You can make some beautifully santiny textured potages with it.

Early fall is also the time for reassessing the spice rack and pantry, The average shelf life of a spice is about three months. Get rid of the older ones now and replace with fresher versions. These will give both sweet and savory recipes the much needed flavor that makes dishes and cakes so distinct. Keep plenty of cinnamon on hand for baking , cooking and topping lattes and cappuccinos. The same goes for nutmeg which can be used in everything from dressings to topping custards. If you still have last year's flour toss it. It can only last up to a year in the fridge. Get a new package because you will need it  for everything form bake sales to Christmas cookies. Also get yeast too. It's good for all those Friday night pizzas as well as creating fun Halloween pizzas too. new baking powder is a must as well. It too is used in all sorts of savory and sweet baked dishes.Now is a good time to check all those cans of beans in the pantry. Usually they will only stay fresh in the can for one or two years. If they're nearing experation time then turn into a tasty crockpot chili or a curried stew. Save the chickpea water or aquafaba for making meringues,

It a' new season. TIme to reassess what you have. Revitalize. Throw out  . Stock up.  Begin the fall season with fresh starts.

A Quick Fall Remodel

Autumn is the time for any  kind of remodeling. Lord knows my kitchen needed it, with a thirty plus year old microwave table and an old broken dishwasher used as a pantry. It was definitely time for a quick upgrade.

 Thank heavens for Lowe's I was able to buy two cabinets that could be used for either a kitchen or laundry room. Each cost $160 each - not bad.

They were more or  less easy to assemble, with the biggest head ache being the handles.They fit perfectly in my postage stamp sized kitchen and hold most of my junk.

You can see it's roomy and one can hold a lot.

The other side is sheer mess but that will be straightened up. Honest.

What I love is that it can be customized. Right away I had to add matching hooks (that I bought at Target) for my many pot holders.

They are kind of like twins to the door and drawer handles.

Then there is the hook is on the side., again bought at Target.

My extension cord is multipurpose, being used for the microwave and toaster oven.

Sometimes all it takes is just a small addition to make a kitchen bright again. My new cabinets did just that. It's an easy fix - and one that will last a long time.

DIY Kitchens Can You Do It?

Like everything else ,kitchens get old and worn. Cabinets need to be updated. Sinks need to be replaced.Besides redoing the room is always a lift. There's nothing like a brand new kitchen to cook in. There is one problem - cost. Can  you afford it? Or do you think you can do it yourself.

The average cost of kitchen remodeling in the States is anywhere from $10,000 to $15,000. A usual remodel consists of upgrading your sink and faucet, installing or replacing your counter tops,along with adding a tile back splash. The biggest transformation are the cabinets. It's refacing or refinishing.  If they're really old then a complete tear out is necessary and new ones will be installed. A new oven and microwave may be installed as well. It's an expensive deal that only a home loan can cover. Many remodeling companies can redo kitchens but the price can be extraordinarily steep. You can save money by remodeling it yourself. If you're handy and ambitious , then this is the project for you and your friends. Just know your limits. DIY stores like Home Depot has classes for this. Take them. Garner as much info about reconstruction  and plumbing as you can. Don't be afraid to ask questions. You have to be well prepared before you start. One small mistake could lead to something major disaster later on.

Before you start , look over decorating sites and magazines. Get an idea of what you want. Whether you do it yourself or get a company in , have a clear vision of what you want in your kitchen. Do you want solid cabinets or one with glass panes? Then there's the question of what wood to choose. Do you go for maple which is the sturdiest  but the staining it could come out blotchy? What about the most inexpensive pine? It's pretty and rustic looking but can easily dent or scratch due to it being soft wood. Cherry is another beautiful  choice, but's it's super expensive. The same goes for walnut and oak.What kind of sink do you fancy. A double or a single basin? Counter tops are important too. There are a mouth watering array of different stones. Granite is by far the most popular yet again, it's costly. However it does add to a home's resale value. Soapstone is also popular because it can absorb water along with giving the kitchen a rich antique look. Of course there is marble, the lushest of all the counter top materials. The deep grey random veining will give any kitchen, large or small, a glam vibe. Like quartz  countertops, it's expensive and heavy. A more affordable material are the classic tiles. They're pretty, come in a variety of different patterns and add charm to any kitchen.Other choices are laminate and wood.

Do it yourself kitchens can be a rewarding and fun fall project. Just know what you're getting into. There's a lot of work but then end product is a beautiful new kitchen.
